One of Huascars first actions saw her raiding Spanish merchant ships in 1866. After attacking British ships, she was attacked by the British frigate Shah, which launched the first torpedo attack in history, although it missed.

In 1879 she was involved in Perus war with Chile, and surrounded and captured by 6 enemy warships. She was refitted by her new owners with 2 x 8" Armstrong breech loaders replacing the 10" guns, and 2 x 6pdr and 3 x 37mm guns were added. She was later used for gunnery training.

She was preserved as a museum ship at Talchuano, Chile, where she remains today
