In spring 1919, Poltava was moved to the River Neva to defend the city of Petrograd. She became partially sunk in the river due to her poor condition. Throughout the 1920s she was used for spares for the other Ganguts.

On 7th July 1926, Poltava was renamed Frunze. In 1928, work began on repairs, but this was soon stopped and she was converted into a barracks ship. In 1944, she was towed to Kronshtadt.
