On 20th October 1916, Imperatritsa Maria sank at Sevastopol after an internal explosion.
Although sabotage has been suggested, it is more likely that decomposing oor unstable
cordite caused the explosion.
In 1917, she was refloated upside down, but the revolution cauased all work to be stopped
and she again sank. In 1922 the wreck was raised and later scrapped at Sevastopol. The
12" turrets were salvaged between 1931 and 1933.
