The contracts for these ships were initially won by Blohm & Voss, Hamburg, but
the Russian government later gave the orders to local yards. The armour protection
was extensive, but light as a result. All except Poltava were modified in the inter
war period.
Some of this class carried a seaplane on the third turret. |

These ships were modified copies of the previous Gangut class. Armour protection was increased, at the expense of speed. |
| Imperator Nikolai I / Demokratiya | As Turkey had purchased several foreign ships to use in the Black Sea, Imperator Nikolai I was built to restore Russian superiority there. As she was required to be built as quickly as possible, she was built to a modified Imperatritsa Maria design. |

These were by far the largest Russian warships designed at the time, but the German invasion caused them to be cancelled. The postwar shipyards were unable to complete them. |
