The Kirovs were the first major warships to be built by the Russians since the revolution. The first designs were built in cooperation with the Italians, and were based on the Raimondo Montecuccoli. But the Italian design was considered too lightly armed and constructed and the ships that were built were of all-Russian design. |

The Maxim Gorkys were built to the Kirov design, but with increased engine power and oil bunkerage. Displacement increased by some 300 tons as a result. |
