The Chapayevs were based on the Project 26 ships, but with increased armament
and protection. Some of the ships were cancelled when the Germans invaded Russia,
and the rest were completed after the war.
Four others were planned for construction beginning in 1941. They were provisionally named Lenin, Dzerzinski, Aurora and Lazo. None were started. |

The Sverdlovs were intended to replace all the older cruisers built before and during WWII. Thirty
ships were planned, but when Krushchev came to power, he forced the navy to cancel the programme as
he considered the ships outdated.
Some were finished as gun cruisers while others were converted to command or guided missile ships. |
