History & Modifications



K16:
K16 was commissioned in the Northern Fleet. She was refitted with RSM-20 / SS-N-5 Serb missiles. She has been decommissioned.

K19:
K19 was commissioned in the Northern Fleet. On 4th July 1961, a leak in the reactors primary circuit aused a major emergency. Several of the crew went into the reactor compartment to attempt repairs, but this proved impossible, and another submarine took off the crew and K19 was towed home. Eight of the crew later died from radiation poisoning.

In the 1960s, she was refitted with RSM-20 / SS-N-5 Serb missiles. On 4th February 1972, she caught fire while on patrol off Newfoundland. No less than 24 days were spent fighting the fire, and 28 of the crew were killed. More than 30 ships were involved in rescuing K19, which returned to base on 4th April. She was decommissioned in 1991.

K33:
K33 was commissioned in the Northern Fleet. She was refitted with RSM-20 / SS-N-5 missiles. She has been decommissioned.

K40:
K40 was commissioned in the Northern Fleet. She was refitted with RSM-20 / SS-N-5 missiles. She has been decommissioned.

K55:
K55 was commissioned in the Pacific Fleet. She has been decommissioned.

K145:
K145 was commissioned in the Northern Fleet. In 1966 she was given a major refit. The hull was enlarged and measured 416' 6" x 30' 2" x 23' 3" / 127.00m x 9.20m x 7.10m, and the fin was enlarged to carry six RSM-40 / SS-N-X8 Sawfly missiles. She has been decommissioned.

K149:
K149 was commissioned in the Northern Fleet. She was renamed Ukrainsky Komsomolets in 1969. In the 1960s she was refitted with RSM-20 / SS-N-5 Serb missiles. She has been decommissioned.

K178:
K178 was commissioned in the Pacific Fleet. She has been decommissioned.
