Midway Class

CV/CVB43 Coral Sea
CV/CVB42 Coral Sea / Franklin D. Roosevelt
CV/CVB41 Midway
The Midways followed British ideas and had better armoured decks than their American predecessors. All were extensively modernised and saw long service.

United States Class

CVA58 United States The United States would have been the first carrier to operate nuclear capable aircraft, but a political rethink caused the cancellation of the ship shortly after construction began. She would have been unusual in not having a traditional island structure.

4 other ships of this class were planned, but construction never commenced, and all 5 were cancelled on the same day.

Forrestal Class

CVA/CV59 Forrestal
CVA/CV62 Independance
CVA/CV61 Ranger
CVA/CV60 Saratoga
The Forrestals were based on the United States design and proved successful and long lasting.

Kitty Hawk Class

CVA/CV66 America
CVA/CV64 Constellation
CVA/CV67 John F. Kennedy
CVA/CV63 Kitty Hawk
The Kitty Hawks are based on the Forrestals, but with the island structure set further back to improve the flightdeck layout.

The Kennedy was designed with nuclear propulsion, but financial restructions led to her being built as a modified Kitty Hawk.
