South Carolina Class

BB27 Michigan
BB26 South Carolina
The first American dreadnoughts mounted the same broadside as Dreadnought, but requiring 2 fewer barrels. The design's weakness was in the refusal to adopt steam turbines, instead keeping the triple expansion engines.

Delaware Class

BB28 Delaware
BB29 North Dakota
The Delawares added 2 more 12" guns, and had a heavier secondary armament. Whilst Delaware had triple expansion engines, North Dakota was the first American battleship with steam turbines.

Florida Class

BB30 Florida
BB31 Utah
The Floridas were enlarged Delawares, but were planned with 8 14" guns, which were not developed in time. They were the first American battleships with 4 shafts.

Wyoming Class

BB33 Arkansas
BB32 Wyoming
The Wyomings were enlarged Floridas, and were designed with triple turrets. As this was not available, a unique 6 twin turret layout was adopted.

New York Class

BB34 New York
BB35 Texas
The New Yorks reverted to triple expansion machinery as the standards for the steam turbines set by the navy were refused by the builders. They were the first American battleships to mount 14" guns.

Nevada Class

BB36 Nevada
BB37 Oklahoma
The Nevadas were the first American battleship with all or nothing protection. Oklahoma kept to triple expansion machinery, while Nevada readopted steam turbines.

Pennsylvania Class

BB39 Arizona
BB38 Pennsylvania
The Pennsylvanias were the first American battleships with triple turrets. Cruising turbines were fitted on the wing shafts to increase range.

New Mexico Class

BB42 Idaho
BB41 Mississippi
BB40 New Mexico
New Mexico became the first major warship to be fitted with turbo electric drive whilst the others retained geared turbines. In the interwar years all were modernised.

Tennessee Class

BB44 California
BB43 Tennessee
The Tennesees were improved New Mexicos. Both were sunk at Pearl Harbour, and, after salvage, were effectivly rebuilt.

Colorado Class

BB45 Colorado
BB46 Maryland
BB47 Washington
BB48 West Virginia
The Coolorados were the first American battleships to mount 16" guns, the decision being influenced by the Japanese Nagatos.

South Dakota Class

BB50 Indiana
BB53 Iowa
BB54 Massacusetts
BB51 Montana
BB52 North Carolina
BB49 South Dakota
None of the South Dakotas would be completed due to the Washington Treaty. Protection was considerably improved on their predecessors.

North Carolina Class

BB55 North Carolina
BB56 Washington
The North Carolinas were designed with 14" guns in quad turrets, but Japanese secrecy about their intentions forced n increase to 16".

South Dakota Class

BB60 Alabama
BB58 Indiana
BB59 Massachusetts
BB57 South Dakota
The South Dakotas were improved versions of the North Carolinas. Protection was improved, but the increased beam meant that they were slower then their predecessors, even with more installed power.

Iowa Class

BB65 Illinois
BB61 Iowa
BB66 Kentucky
BB63 Missouri
BB62 New Jersey
BB64 Wisconsin
The Iowas were the ultimate in American battleship design, and have proved amongst the most military projects in history. Increased length and engine power created the fastest battleships built, and they were also very manouverable.

Montana Class

BB71 Louisiana
BB69 Maine
BB67 Montana
BB70 New Hampshire
BB68 Ohio
The Montanas were intended to be enlarged Iowas, with speed traded for protection. Wartime priorities and economies meant than none would be built.
