United States PreDreadnoughts

Entries in bold indicate photos.

Texas Class

Texas / San Marcos The Texas was based on a foreign design which sacrificed speed for firepower.

Maine Class

Maine The Maine was an enlarged version of the Brazilian Riachuelo, and was built with barque rigging. Her celebrated sinking led directly to the Spanish American war.

Indiana Class

BB1 Indiana
BB2 Massachusetts
BB3 Oregon / IX22
The Indianas were intended as coastal defence battleships, and as such had a low freeboard, which made them poor seaboats.

Iowa Class

BB4 Iowa The Iowa was the first US seagoing battleship.

Kearsage Class

BB5 Kearsage / AB15
BB6 Kentucky
The Kearsages featured better protection than their predecessors. They also introduced superimposed turrets. Intended to save weight, this feature caused blast damage as the turrets had to be aimed together.

Illinois Class

BB8 Alabama
BB7 Illinois / IX15 / Prairie State
BB9 Wisconsin
The Ilinois class were based on the Kearsages, with an increased secondary armament.

Maine Class

BB10 Maine
BB11 Missouri
BB12 Ohio
The Maines were improved versions of the Illinois class.

Virginia Class

BB15 Georgia
BB14 Nebraska
BB16 New Jersey
BB17 Rhode Island
BB13 Virginia
The Virginias reintroduced the superimposed turrets for the last time, which led to heavy rolling.

Connecticut Class

BB18 Connecticut
BB21 Kansas
BB19 Louisiana
BB22 Minnesota
BB25 New Hampshire
BB20 Vermont
The Connecticuts were the best US predreadnoughts, with improved armour, seakeeping and firepower. But their completion after HMS Dreadnought meant that they were as obsolete as every other predreadnought.

Mississippi Class

BB24 Idaho
BB23 Mississippi
The Mississippis were smaller editions of the Connecticuts, intended as a cost saving measure. Both were soon sold to Greece, and sunk in WW2.
