The Sacramentos were designed as a one stop service ship to keep carrier groups supplied. Five were originally planned, but the last was cancelled due to cost, despite the effectivly 'free' powerplants - Sacramento and Camden shared the boilers and turbines intended for the battleship Kentucky, and Seattle and Detroit shared Illinois' machinery. |
