Acknowledgements

First and foremost thanks are due to my supervisor, Dr. Geraint Vaughan, without whose guidance and encouragement this thesis would not be what it is today, and to Dr. Bill Bell of the National Physical Laboratory at Teddington who has acted as a second supervisor, and whose energetic and attentive enthusiasm, and occasional lunacy, were invaluable in the laboratory and field work described herein. Thanks also to Clare Murphy who, along with Bill, had the onerous task of introducing me to Fourier spectroscopy, and providing driving lessons on the 120M.

Thanks are due to many at NPL, including Barrie Jolliffe for many things, especially with regard to the HBr cell, and for his ability to pull old pieces of equipment from nowhere, and make them work; Dr. Theo Theocharous for lending his He:Ne laser when ours wouldn't work; Dr. Frank Clarke for providing diffusers, and suggestions when we were stumped; Nigel Swann for working wonders in the workshop: without his versatility, skill and dedication none of the experimental work would have been possible; and Peter Woods who claims to keep the whole show on the road.

To the rest of the Ozone Group (especially Dr. Lee Bartlett, Dr. Fiona O'Connor, Dr. Wendy Davies, Aidan Green and Dr. Carolyne Timmis), thanks for your impressive tolerance and support, and to Dr. Richard Kift who had the misfortune to join the department during my writing-up. My thanks also go to the many others in the wider ozone community who have cheerfully answered my frequently ill-posed questions and requests: you know who you are, and may consider yourselves thanked!

Thanks for financial support go to the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and the National Physical Laboratory.

Finally, whilst many thanks go to The Elizabethan Madrigal Singers, for the chance to make a loud noise when I really needed to (and some seriously good music), my greatest debt of thanks must be to my family for their continued and unfailing support and faith in me, and to Siân, without whom this thesis would not be...
