1/12th scale Unlimited Hydroplane - Miss Budweiser

NDQ Speed Storm ready to run, bought from ebay for £27, the plan is to race it in the SWAMBC F4 championship.

Hull is a thick ABS two part construction, stripped of all original fittings it weighs a whopping 3.5 lbs.

Beam = 14.4in Length = 29in Weight = 7.5 lbs all up

MOTOR = Graupner Speed 700BB Turbo 8.4V

PROPELLER = Graupner 2317.48/51 or Octura X447, on 0.13in flexi drive with 3/16in drive dog

SPEED CONTROL = Overlander 50A waterproof ESC with additional water cooling, BEC not used

RUDDER CONTROL = Acoms AS 16 standard servo

TRANSMITTER = Acoms Techniplus 2 channel 27MHz or Futaba 6EXA 40MHz - stops clitching problem

RECEIVER = Acoms AR-2/27 2channel 27MHz with BEC or Futaba F136 without BEC

POWER SUPPLY = 12 GP3300 NiMH sub C, in two 6 packs

04 February 2006

Running as bought with twin 280's and 6 cell 7.2V 1800mAH NiCD pack.

04 February 2006

Very slow and unable to get near the plane, steering by switching off one motor.

04 February 2006

Internal layout, all electronics in neat water proof box.

04 February 2006

Internal layout hull bottom.

04 February 2006

Internal layout hull top.

18 February 2006

New transom hardware, large plate from 1in alluminium angle, bolted through from bottom into a captive 1/8 in tapped ally plate. Strut (octura) is held in more 1in angle, rudder is from a Sintra 700. Note cooling water pickups using old propshaft exit points.

18 February 2006

Motor mount from 1/8in alluminium, simply bolted through hull bottom, some tearing occured during bending, but it has plenty of strength left.

18 February 2006

Motor fitted, note Octura flex hex coupler to flexi drive.

18 February 2006

Internal layout before reattaching the hull top. Boat run with two 6 cell GP3300 packs in the cockpit area, struggled onto the plane with 2317.45 prop, better with X447, but suffering from a radio glitch.... more to do.

04 March 2006

Alternative internal layout, battery packs to each side of the motor with ESC in cockpit, G of C now further back. Now using a receiver battery pack to try and avoid previous glithes, reveiver wrapped in balloon then foil, before duct tape to give velcro something solid to grip.

04 March 2006

Octura X447 prop fitted, lower than previous test, after looking at images of other unlimiteds.

04 March 2006

Ready for another test.
