Emily Florence Munday was born in New Tunstall, near Sunderland in 1898. Her father, William Robert Munday had moved north to find work in the coal mines of Durham. He had been born in Cerne Abbas, Dorset in 1853 and had worked as a currier of leather there. He made the move north with his brother Thomas just a few years before Emily was born.
