I am trying to find places in thanet that are suitable for me and others who have limited mobility, I have only recently been able to start fishing again, because I can only stagger a few yards. but I did catch fish. that was fantastic. I am particularly looking at the thanet area and the two places I have so far located can also take wheelchair anglers with no problem, these are in the Minnis Bay area and also close to Margate. Any others from you healthy friends would be more than welcome, but do please remember that steps and steep slopes are OUT. Ramsgates main beach has a nice wall you can fish from which is situated right alongside a carpark. Once in Ramsgate simply follow the signs for the main beach, park in the first car park at the bottom of the hill. Its a sandy venue with mainly flatties in my catches. There are toilets as you head toward the main beach its self, about 600yds. As far as diabled access is concerned its fine but the fishing isn't the best around.

Colwyn Bay promenade in North Wales I think would be suitable to fish . Parking is right by the water's edge at high water ,so it is possible to sit in your car and watch your rods.Go to http://www.fishwales.co.uk/beaches.htm and see pictures of Old Colwyn .The promenade is only two minutes off the A55 .

New Brighton Promenade,Wirral,Merseyside.Park next to rods(I actually sit in the car and watch them)with parking disc and Bobbies discretion,otherwise it's a 5 yard walk(yes 5 yards) to a parking spot.Location from Liverpool.Go through tunnel and signpost New Brighton.Go right along prom 'til last roundabout at Rowson Street.Go up the hill,through the lights,up the hill again and 3rd left is Vaughn Rd.Go straight to the bottom. Sandy bottom,very few snags.Good for flaties,whiting,codling etc.Only fished at high water,best an hour or so before and after.Toilets 100 yds but steps lead down to the water.Nice spot.Don't go there.It's mine!! Another spot is to the left of Seacombe ferry at high water or before.Straight along the prom from New Brighton but you have to take the top Road.Very productive for whiting,codling etc but very snaggy.Guarantee you'll lose at least one rig so fish old stuff.Parking,again,next to rods. I am a sea angler with a disability, I have enjoyed fishing from the Jetty in Aberyswyth Wales. It has easy access through the town. Their are toilets at the bottom of the jetty and also carparking. I have never had to walk to far to gain access. It really needs to be fished two before high tide and the two hours afterwards. fishing can be patchy but flounder, whiting, small wrasse, and the occasional bass can all be caught also it seems their is always an eel or two about. I think it is Good for disabled anglers and would encourage anyone to try it out.

Peterhead South Breakwater. You can drive straight on to the breakwater and fish virtually anywhere along it (most head for the rotunda at the end, but its not necessary). There are no railings or walls at all and many of the best fish come within 10 yards of the edge. You must beware the pier in anything more than moderate seas when water will sweep right over the breakwater. There is no difficulty in access, but there are no facilities either, of any description. Wheelchair users may need to beware narrow cracks in the concrete surface - there aren't too many, but some caution is required. Bait may be a problem. Fish bait can be bought in Aberdeen, but not rag or lug as far as I know. The water is deep, with up to 90 feet at high water right alongside the breakwater. Casting 50 yards plus on the seaward side will put you over sand (many dabs, a few plaice and codling). Close in on the seaward side will produce cod and ling, some pollock and small coalfish. Fishing on the landward side is generally over soft ground for dabs and small codling, with odd plaice nearer the rotunda. Casting 10-20 yards to the landward side of the rotunda can sometimes produce decent bags of codling. Overall a wide range of species (more than 20) have been taken off the south pier and its northern equivalent, but it can be a waiting game and there are days when the pier is very quiet indeed. Access is possible to the north breakwater too, but as far as I know cars are not allowed, and it can be a longish trek to the end.

Somerset, Blue Anchor Bay - you can fish from your car there. Very easy access, and hence it is quite popular, you will hardly ever be alone. Fishing can be patchy though. No public toilets, but there are a couple of pubs. Nt sure about access into the pubs, not that I can remember anyway!!

colwyn bay sea front can be fished straight out of the car & toilets are spread all along its length ,on big tides between the pier & rhos on sea the water is up to the wall longer llandudno pier is also easily accessed with a car park next to the gate & no steps or ramps, there are toilets at the end of the pier but they have been closed just lately due to idiots,there are also permanent picnic tables which you can set up on at night .a man comes round to collect the fee & keep an eye on things.

The Piermaster and staff are well used to dealing with disabled people, and
have their own wheel chair for use by members of the public
No
steps onto the Pier, but a moderately steep ramp down onto it from the Toll
House. Assistance may be needed to get back up after fishing.
The Pier has a continuous line of seating on both sides, and is wide enough
for wheelchairs. The Pier has solid wood planking along it's side, so the
water cannot be seen from a wheelchair.
No distance casting is needed - baits can be simply dropped over the side
if necessary.
There
are basic toilets (male and female) across the road from the Toll House.
There are none on the Pier itself.

I can only give one possible venue that I know well - the NCP car park at Fort William.
You can
park right at the wall and virtually fish from your car.
It can be crowded in summer sometimes, and areas are cordoned off when events like the motorbike trials are on, or when rescue helicopters are landing.
The height of the wall may or may not be a problem - I've attached a (not very good) scan which has the wall in the background so you can make your mind up whether or not it is suitable.
There
are No toilet facilities in the immediate vicinity. The
nearest public toilets (that I know of) are not suitable for disabled people.
Best bet would be Safeways at the other end of town.:-(
As for the fishing - best from mid-May to mid January. Dogfish throughout this time; dabs and thornbacks most common early in the season. Pollack, coalfish, plaice and codling - mostly on the small side - during the summer months, and codling reappearing again in winter. Whiting from late September - December-ish, but unlikely that any will be in size. Best results with casts of 60-70 yards plus, but some eels, blennies, sea scorpions etc can be caught straight down the wall. A few localised snags - mooring ropes can be a problem when fishing at distance.
Bait: mackerel, mussels and lug all do well.
Jaybee Hendon Promenade, Sunderland
Hendon
offers excellent access for all disabled anglers.
You can drive along its entire length and you can literally " fish from the back of the car".
A 3' wall runs the full length of the Promenade and is ideal for laying out bait, flasks, fish etc. On the seaward side are strong railings, again around 3', offering safety as well as a convenient "rod rest".
The only problem I envisage for the wheelchair bound, in particular, is in lifting fish. Though only around 15' high, much of the Promenade has heavy boulders at the base, put there as sea defences. This isn't too much of a problem if you can "stretch" out with the rod and lift while your tackle is still clear. Fortunately there are areas where no such boulders have been placed.
Fishing from promenade (rather than the beach) is possible from about 2 hours before high water to 2 hours back. Longer if you are a big caster.

I am a Charter Skipper from Littlehampton West Sussex and own the vessel "Michelle Mary" a Lochin 38'. berthed in Littlehampton Marina.
This year I took a party of disabled people from a home out fishing. There was 8 disabled and 2 carers. Three were in wheelchairs one of which had lost both legs, the others had varying disabilites.
There
is a ramp that leads down to the pontoon which can be steep if the tide is
low, this is not a problem as long as there is a couple of able bodied people
to help.
