Aug 23 1999 Piled into a van half awake . There were not many faces I knew , but I was the newcomer so not very suprising . The welcome was warm as we trundled towards our objective in Small Dole, near Henfield, West Sussex and after a small unintended detour we arrived at a large lay-by on the A2037 already packed with vechlies sporting car stickers calling to ban vivisection , blood sports or save the planet , nice to see we weren't alone . Everyone was already assembled on the bank opposite the entrance to Shamrock farm. Stalls supplying info popped up , people chanted slogans at the nervous looking police and a bright pink van covered in banners slow timed it back and forth down the road. |

| We were there opposing the farm's importation of macaque monkeys into Britain to be used in medical testing. A science that is out dated and essentially flawed as the experiments carried out bare no relation to how humans react which has been shown countless times e.g. Thalidomide, Orabilex, Clioqiunol, Isoprenaline, Encainide , Flecainide etc... Speakers informed us of the current situation regarding the farm and we lazed in the sun rallying cries of "Close Down Shammrock Farm" . Which when shouted slightly out of time didn't half sound like "Burn Down Shammrock Farm" which brought a wry smile to a few faces. The police were looking far to relaxed so they were supplied with a spur of the moment road invasion which split into two main groups , one up the road and one down | |
| Not impressed the police eventually pulled riot vans across the road to stop our progress . But only succeeded in forcing us round by a field right beside the Farm OOPs! With the police spread ridiculously thin they tried to form a perimeter round the farm and then, scary , scary they brought the attack dogs out ! "Get back or we'll release the dogs" barked a Senior officer "Don't think we Won't " a smug grin had started to spread across his face which soon disappeared , I couldn't help laughing out loud at this ridiculous little man and he couldn't help but ask why. I pointed round the field ,to the women , children the elderly who were all in our number ".Attack dogs don't discriminate !" His face sank , he stalked off and our camera's looked on. |

After running the police about for a while we found a public foot path , but alas it was no longer open as 40 plus riot police had decided to BLOCK IT , so we kept them hanging all afternoon ! They even splashed out on a helicopter for us . Similar groups had targeted workers homes and other parts of the farm .With security costs and local awareness rising its becoming increasingly difficult for Shamrock Farm to operate . A spokeswoman for the farm, which imports macaque monkeys from south east Asia and keeps up to 300 at a time, said it was a "legitimate" business. "We do not do experiments here and we do not breed," she said. "What we do is import them and sell them to medical laboratories, predominantly in the UK." She added that the farm was fully licensed and regularly inspected by the Home Office. It adhered to strict guidelines governing the transportation and quarantine of its monkeys. "As long as our activity continues to be licensed we will carry on," she said. "We believe what we are doing is right." Ms Vernelli said protesters were celebrating closing Hill Grove cat farm in Oxfordshire last week. She said: "The focus of today is that we broke Hill Grove and we can close Shamrock. Even if it takes two years we will still be here." Ms Vernelli denounced violent action, saying people power had closed Hill Grove Farm and would close Shamrock Farm.
