Shamrock (GB) LTD are the middle link in a chain of suffering, supplying monkeys from around the world to vivisection laboratories in the UK and Europe. Join our campaign to close them down! Owned by the multinational company Bausch & Lomb (best known for their contact lenses and Ray Ban sunglasses), Shamrock imports primates from Mauritius, the Philippines and China, holding them at their West Sussex site. They are Europe's largest primate holding facility, employing 17 staff and are licensed by the Home Office to supply primates for vivisection. Following campaigns highlighting the cruelty of transporting these monkeys vast distances, many airlines and ferry companies now refuse Shamrock's business. Monkeys are packed in tiny crates, often too small for them to stand up, for up to two and a half days. But reaching Shamrock is only the beginning of the monkeys' nightmare. Up to 300 Cynomolgus and Rhesus macaque monkeys are kept here in tiny, inadequate cages, inside Portakabins with little or no natural light. Denied the opportunity to mix freely in their natural social groupings, they are confined alone, in pairs or sometimes in small groups - depending entirely on the wishes of the buyers. For up to two months the monkeys are quarantined, x-rayed, examined and tested for contagious diseases before being sold to laboratories where they are experimented on. Customers of Shamrock have included: Huntingdon Life Sciences, SmithKline Beecham, GaxoWellcome, Inveresk Research and the Universities of Glasgow, Oxford, Manchester, London, and Cambridge. SHAMROCK: FORTY YEARS OF SUFFERING Since it was set up in 1954, Shamrock has profited from animals suffering. During its 40 year history it has traded in many species including patas, grivet and squirral monkeys, baboons and now macaques. Following an international campaign, they were forced to stop selling wild caught monkeys and now deal solely in animals 'captive bred' in their country of origin. However, there are virtually no regulations or laws to prevent taking monkeys from the wild to replenish the 'breeding' stock, so numbers of many species continue to decline. Both species Shamrock currently sells are on Appendix 11 of CITES - meaning that unless trade is regulated, they will become endangered VIVISECTION - BAD SCIENCE Monkeys are used in a wide range of experiments, including 'research' into diseases such as AIDS, Alzheimer's and Epilepsy as well as psychological or behavioral experiments. Much of this work is carried out by pharmaceutical companies for commercial (not medical) reasons. Vivisectors try to induce a human illness in the monkey and study various drugs or treatments. This is flawed science - the only way to study our illness and diseases is in humans, not other animals. Animal researchers and pro-vivisection groups, claim that many advances in medical science have been due to the use of primates and future progress in fighting diseases is dependent upon their continued use. The fact is that animal research, far from aiding medical progress, hinders it, delaying and distorting scientific breakthroughs. It is time to stop using animals in crude experiments and move over to real science which will help prevent disease and suffering. Meanwhile, primates continue to be used in trivial, cruel and repetitive experiments. For further information please see our web page http://www.enviroweb.org/arc/Shamrock/index.htm
