Not only are Macs being used in professional graphics and audio/video work, but with the advent of the family Mac, the iMac, more games are being developed to take advantage of the Apples power.

Dark Forces

Star Wars is probably the most successful film series evr made, and that was before all the hype of the revamped versions and of course the pre-quel. LucasArts released a wide range of Star Wars computer games and they have been a constant hit with gamers. Dark Forces is a sort of action and role play game all in one. You go around a maze of corridors and caverns, battling the Empires storm troopers and other enemies and solving puzzles, mainly how to open certian doors or get around objects. Its great fun and is pre-3d card, so you can run it on any power macs.

Tomb Raider Gold

Lara Croft took the world by storm when released on Playstation, and she has done the same again when she came over to the Mac. She is a sort of female Indianna Jones, battling bad guys and ancient booby traps, scouring the world (Egypt and Atlantis) for ancient treasures. It will run on a standard Mac, though the graphics will be 'grainy'. It is best played on an iMac or G3 as the 3d cards show all the rich textures. One word of warning, don't try and kiss her, you'll get punctured!!!

Tomb Raider 2

She's back and the adventure begins once more as Lara Croft, the cross between Indianna Jones and Xeana:Warrior Princess, goes in search of more treasure whilst battling more animals and bad guys. There are extra features such as jumping through glass windows and using vehicles, such as a powerboat in Venice, and a Snow Mobile. It is great fun, but takes a long time to complete.

Tomb Raider 3

The phenomonom of Lara returns in the third episode. This version sees more extras added such as new moves (crawling and monkey swings) and new special effects with smoke and water effects, and some extra vehicles. You can try out the quad bike in the 'tutorial' section (Lara's home).

Beware, its not over yet.....Tomb Raider 4 has just been released for the Mac!!

Wolfenstein

This shareware game caused quite a storm with its Nazi images and some saying it glorified war. I can understand their feelings, but to me it is just a game, though if you like dogs it may depress you. There are secret doors to find and Nazi loot to collect and is an active game. It should run on pre-power macs.

Marathon

The Marathon trilogy is infamous in the Mac world. One of the first networkable games I think. You go around shooting aliens and solving puzzles in a similar vein to Wolfenstein and Tomb Raider. I got the special boxed set conating all 3 games as well as 3rd party 'maps' and editors to make your own games.

Sim City 2000

Sim City has spawned a huge wave of these strange yet addictive 'power play' games. You are given some money and you slowly build up a city, complete with police stations and schools, airports and railways. You may face disasters such as earthquakes or a nuclear meltdown and will have to send in your firefighters to quosh the flames and then rebuild your city without raising taxes and losing your population.
