The Mac uses files, folders, alias's and
applications.
- File (or Document)- This can be a letter or a
picture, or perhaps a file needed for as game. Double
clicking will open the file in the program that made
it.
- Folder - This is like a folder on your desk. It is a
place where you store all the bits of paper and photos
you need for your work. You can have as many ass you
want. You can drag files ontop of a folder and they will
be placed inside it for you.
- Applicaions (called an App) or Programs - these are
the games or word processors you use on the Mac. Double
clicking will open the app.
- Alias - this is an easy way of finding the files you
need without going through a load of folders. They are
not copies, just pointers to the item you want. Double
clicking an alias will open the original file. You can
recognise an alias by the little arrow in the lower left
corner of the icon

Menu Bar
- Here you will find commands for using your apps, such
as Save or adding effects in Photoshop.
- The little coloured Apple at the far left is known as
the Apple Menu and contains useful little apps for
controlling the Mac.
- The bar at the right saying Finder lets you select
between whatever programs are running. The box marked
Applications is a part of it allowing you to see at a
glance what is running, in this case XXX & XXX.

Control Strip
If you press COMMAND-CONTROL-S at the same time a control
strip will pop out allowing you to alter functions of the
Mac.
The main ones are:
- Monitor Colour - you can choose between 256 colours
or Millions of colours. Leave it set for millions.
- Monitor Resolution - This alters the amount of
screenspace that is available. Its like having a larger
desk to hold more things on. This is why it is called a
desktop
- Volume - pretty obvious I hope !
