Premiere Tutorial 1: A New Project

These pages are still under construction and more information will be added in due course

  • Double click on the Premiere icon and the program will start. You can also do this by double-clicking on a 'project' icon as well.
  • Select "New Project" from the menu
  • From the settings menu which appears choose Media 100-Low Res. This is good enough for VHS work, though if using S-VHS use the Hi-Res setting.
  • A project will be created with the settings you will need.

  • You now need to capture some video onto the hard disk drive, select movie capture from the file menu. A box will now appear. Play your video in the top VCR. You may need to adjust sound settings, check the advanced features at the bottom of this page.
  • Just before the clip you want starts, click on the record button. The screen will go blue and have a small video image in the centre. Click on the nouse button to stop digitising
  • There will now be a large white square, this is your video clip. It appears white due to a quirk in the Media 100 capture card.

  • Select Add this clip from the menu bar, you will then be asked if you want to save it. Click on OK or press enter or return on the keyboard.
  • A new dialogue box will appear. Select New Folder and give it a name. This is where all your clips will be stored. Think of it as a cardboard box where you put all your video tapes.

  • Now give the clip a name (I usually give a number first as the Mac will sort it numerically, ie, "01-NAME OF CLIP") then select OK
  • Your clip will now be stored in the project bin on the left. Continue capturing all the clips you need. (Remember you do not need to capture in any particular order, you will be arranging clips in the right order later).
  • Once you have captured all your clips close the capture window by clicking on the little suare in the top left corner of the box.

Sound settings

The standard settings should suffice, however you may have a very loud or quiet sountrack which may mean adjusting the sound level to compensate for this.

  • Whilst in Movie Capture mode select Sound Settings from the menu bar
  • Ajust the volume until the green bar is healthy. If Red appears then you are peaking and the sound will distort.
  • Once set at a good level click the close button and contine recording

Recording sound only

  • Rather than selecting movie capture you can choos esound capture. You will see a new window and the sound level will appear as a grren bar. If it goes red thern adjust the level as described above.
