Details of the Fly! sequal (Fly 2) have just been released. look at the AVSim website (www.avsim.com) Please note that Fly!2K is not the sequal, but version 1 with updates. Brief Description: This is the latest civil flight sim. It is Mac and PC and requires a 3D card for smooth graphics. It uses satellite imagery for the terrain textures which is at different resolutions, so when you are approaching a runway it will go to a higher resolution, whereas high altitude flying will show low resolution. It has 5 basic planes (Single and twin props and a business jet), though 3rd party developers have released a Boeing 757, complete with all the controls and exterior liveries (767 & 777 are also in the pipeline-checkout Precision Manuals web site) and home users are busy making their own planes and scenery. The cockpit views are very accurate and they even have an accurate GPS receiver. It comes with 3 CD-ROM's and a very good manual. This sim can only get better. There is an official web site at http://www.iflytri.com/

Number of Aircraft: at present there are only 5 planes though 3rd party developers are creating more.
There are some great Boeing jets with full working cockpits at:

Scenery Area: The scenery is taken from 25 metre LandSat satellite images and DEM elevation data. At present the satelite textures are mainly generic for the world however there are 5 highly detailed US cities which use hi-res 5 metre images.
There are also custom 3d models of landmarks (stadiums, skyscrapers, etc). You can create your own scenery and models with a scenery creation program (PC only at the moment). There are scenery files for Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon, and more are being made all the time - check out AVSim for the files. *Some of the files range from 5Mb to a whopping 108Mb to download !!

Graphics/Sound: You will need a graphics card to get the best out of it such as the standard ATI cards built-in to the iMacs and G3/G4 range. You can have multiple viewpoints on screen, including exterior views and basic instrumentation as well as vector charts and real sectional air charts as used by real pilots which depict airports and airspace regualations (though this will only be for US airspace). There are also 3d clouds and varied weather conditions. Sound is just as detailed with different sounds for interior and exterior views, along with individual engine noises (for twins) and landing gear and so on.

Special Features: As well as a fully functional cockpit layout there is an accurate recreation of a Bendix/King KLN-89 GPS system, as used in real aircraft. It is so accurate that you can use a real instruction manual to learn how to use it fully. There is a flight planner where you can select naviads/airports on the 'map' and your course will be plotted. You can even print it out to follow on paper. There are working autopilots as well as a Flight Management System (FMS) which will fly the whole route for you, just like in real business jets. |
