How to Add Effects

There are 6 effects (FX) units in the studio and most do similar things. In order to get a sound signal into these units you will need to patch them through the patchbay. Think of this as piping water from one tub to another, basically the sound comes from the mic into the desk and then goes into an FX unit and then goes back into the desk again and finally goes into the ADAT or tape deck.

  1. Once you have set up the desk and ADAT as shown previously, choose an FX unit (we will use the SE70 and mic 1 for our examples) to use and get 2 patch leads and connect them up in the following way.
  2. Insert 9 (mic 1) out to SE70 in
  3. SE70 out to Insert 9 in
  4. Turn on the FX unit selected, you may need to adjust the level input/output controls. Select the effect you want.
  5. Your sound should now have the effect added to it.

Adding Effects to ADAT Recorded Tracks

Often you will record a sound onto ADAT clean (ie, no FX added) but you then want to add FX at a later date. The process is similar to the previous one, except the wiring is slightly different.

  1. Select the playback track (ie, track 1) you wish to affect on the sound desk by turning on the channel & mix buttons.
  2. Connect up the patch bay in the following way: Insert 1 out to SE70 in, SE70 out to Insert 1 in
  3. Select a track to record your new FX track onto (ie, track 2) in the same way as when you record a mic track. (numbered buttons & red sliders)
  4. Arm the ADAT track 2
  5. Record as normal. You will now have 2 tracks, the original 'clean' track, and a copy on track 2 with FX added
