Points of Interest to Film Studies Students: The destruction of the cities was centered on 3 major US cities, ones with major influence in the American society. Washington DC is their capital, containing the White House and US Government. New York is probably the worlds most famous city, and the most major one on the East Coast, though most famous for being full of crime, in contrast Los Angeles is the city of dreams and represents the West Coast. These 3 cities represent all aspects of America, from its governing city, its most infamous city and its most wealthy city. And so on to the films most controversial aspect.........Area 51. Area 51 is a real US Military base and is steeped in secrecy. It is located at Groom Lake (a dry lake bed) in Nevada, some 80 miles North of Las Vegas. The base is thought to be responsible for the creation of the U2 and Blackbird spy planes, along with the current stealth bombers. There is a lot of conjecture that this is where the remains of the Rosewell alien crash site are located. Roswell was mentioned in the film, but the US government have constantly denied any alien presence at Roswell and will not discuss Areas 51 at all. In fact when the film makers refused to cut out any references to Area 51 the military withdrew their help in the making of the film. Somewhat babyish in my opinion as Area 51 has been mentioned on the X-Files, and is well known to UFO experts. A recent two part programme all about the base recently shown on Sky 1 even included Russian spy satelite photos of the base and video of an airplane landing at the base using a telephoto lens. Everyone knows it exists, so to cover its existance up is rather stupid. |
