Titanic

Year: 1998

Cast:

Kate Winslett

Leonardo de Caprico

Synopsis:

A ship hits an iceberg. Well, actually there is more to it than that. This mainly a love story within a disaster movie.....but what a movie!!

Running a 3 hours 9 minutes and costing something like $200 Million to make it may sound a bit much. But it won 11 Oscars, and all of them well won. There is a great amount of computer effects involved, but they are used to help the story, not becouse they could be used. And the 'helicopter' shot from the bow to the stern is fantastic, and Kate Winslett in the nude...WOW!!

I like to think of this as the 'Appollo 13' version of the Titanic disaster. There is so much detail, the Director even used replica Titanic carpets and lifeboat hoists to create the ship. It shows you how people travelled the world by the sea in much the same way Ron Howard wanted to show people how NASA got people into space.

Points of Interest to Film Studies Students:

The opening underwater shots are of the real Titanic on the sea bed.

A near full size mock up of the ship was built on the Mexican coast which was hoisted up by special hydraulic jacks and cranes for the sinking.
