The Pop Video

Brief:

A student band wants you to make a pop video of their latest song

Pre-Production:

Every pop video is different, as is every song. You have to try and make a video to match the sytle of the song. The first thing you need to do is to listen to the song. The band may already have an idea of what to do as they know what the song is about. Go through the normal stages of pre-production, but one constraint you must bare in mind is the length of the song which dictates the length of the video (unless you are Michael Jackson making another "Thriller" !)

  • Ballads tell a 'story''
  • Love songs are normally slow and 'misty' (Flake advert)
  • Upbeat songs are usually fast and racy

Production:

Once you have found the style of the song/video and the planning is done film your video as you would any other video. If the band are meant to be singing the song in the video make sure you have a copy (audio tape or CD) to play back so they can mime to it. You will need to record the backing tapeat the same time as the video as you will need to get the timings right in post-poduction

Post-Production:

Edit as normal, but make sure the timings are right. With pop videos it is important to not only get 'lip synch' with the band, but to also cut on the beats. Pop videos are all about timing, get it wrong, even by a little bit and the viewer will notice.

Only use sfx if you think the video need it. Many bands think their videos have to have all the latest effects in (the same goes for advertising people!), so when they start to get over the top point them in the right direction.

Misc. Notes:

Pop videos are similar to adverts in that you have to put across a message in a short amount of time but with maximum effect in order to make the viewers go out and buy your product, the bands single.
