Paper Edit

Once you have your log sheets finished you can work out where you want your chosen shots to go. the best way to do this is with a paper edit. This is a simple layout of the order for each shot or segment. The one below is divided into 3 categories. The main footage describes what the main part of that scene is, such as an interview with Nigel, the inserts lists the shots to insert over the main footage, such as a shot of a cup of tea when Nigel talks about the first thing they do when they start their shift, and the audio describes any extra audio tracks to be added, such as the music at the opening and closing credits.

If you have time, produce an off-line edit using the paper edit. This is a rough version of the final video and will help you see if there is anything which needs changing, or the client may want something altered, so it will save you valuable on-line editing time to get everything right in the rough cut.
