In Plane Maker you can add special features to your aircraft, even if they are not meant to have them, such as a parachute on a 747

HUD - Head Up Display. This shows your speed, altitude and heading on the cockpit window. This is normally used in fighters.

HOOPS - This puts up a contour display of the terrain and airports. It is useful in low cloud cover. See the pictures below.

BRT - Adjusts the contrast of the HUD

BOEING - You can alter your aircrafts callsign in from the normal US codes (N32387) or the UK codes (G-BHXU) to something a little more personal.

CHUTE - This adds a parachute to your aircraft to slow it down on the runway, normally used by fast fighter jets such as the Blackbird SR-71. Some Cessnas also have chutes which can be deployed inemergencies to prevent you crashing at high speed into the ground. In XP you can now add them to any planes

ARREST GER - Arest Gear is a little hook which catches a rope on the deck of aircarft carriers to stop it quickly. I've added one to a Cessna and landed on the deck, I've even tried it on a 747 but can't seem to land on it !

ANTI-ICE - When flying through cold clouds ice can form on your wings making the aircraft too heavy to fly or even jamming control surfaces. AI warms up the wings to stop ice froming. This is usually on the expensive planes

JETTISON - This is a weight which can be deducted by XP in mid air, thus making the plane lighter. Many XP'ers pretend this weight is weaponry and practise bomb drops using this button. XP5 might have proper weapons, but there is some debate on this issue in the mailing list.

JATO - Jet Assisted Take Off. This is exactly what it sounds like. A rocket is switched on and pushes the aircraft to takeoff speed in a matter of seconds. apparently Army C-130 Hercules planes have them. There was also a story about a man attaching one to his car, trying it out in Arizona. Experts say he lifted off the ground by several hundred feet and crashed into a mountain! His brakes melted as once you ignite one, you cannot turn it off!!!

A HOOPS HUD in cloud. Notice the hoops going towards the runway for landing

HOOPS HUD in VFR (you can see the ground) conditions

The more typical HUD has your airspeed (left), altitude (right) and your heading (top). This saves you looking down at your instruments whilst flying
