X-Plane Adventures: Rainbow 6

I am a big fan of the Tom Clancey novels, and a lot of his books involve flying, whether it is a commercial 747 between the USA to the UK, or a para-military helicopter insertion into Columbia, there is always something flying about. I will try and provide flight plans for the operations detailed in the Rainbow 6 novel, (I will have to re-read his other books and put in other flight plans). In some cases all it will be is the departure and destination, and possibly an aircraft type. In others there may be more details such as weather information. Please feel free to send me your flight plans from your favourite books.

Flight from USA to Heathrow, UK

The first flight is onboard a United Airlines Boeing 777 probably leaving Washington Dulles or National. Somewhere over Sea Isle City, New Jersey, your aircraft is hijacked by terrorists. By luck 2 anti-terrorist officers are on board and regain control of the aircraft. You then fly your plane to RCAF Gander and make an emergency landing. Once at Gander, and after a quick break to relieve your stress from a traumatic incident, you then fly a military VC-20B (a Gulfstream IV) sent over from the states by the CIA to take the anti-terrorist team to RAF Northolt in the UK.

SAS Hereford to Bern, Switzerland via Gatwick.

Terrorists have bungled a raid on a bank in Switzerland, killed a hostage and the Swiss have called in the Rainbow anti-terrorist team. You have to fly them out by chopper (probably using a Lynx or Gazelle) from the SAS Headquarters near Hereford (I could tell you where it is, but then I would have to kill you!!), take off from Gloucestershire which is about 27NM east of the base and head for Gatwick (EGKK). Clancy reckons it will take 25 minutes so he must have been using G-LYNX which holds the world speed record for a helicopter, it took me nearly an hour.

Then fly a British Airways Boeing 757 from Gatwick to Bern Belp (LSZB), Switzerland. It is a normal commercial flight (about 1 hour) so you have normal passengers as well as the special ops team on board. Your aircraft has been cleared at Gatwick and Bern for priority clearance for take off and landing.

The return flight is from Bern to Heathrow EGLL and then by chopper back to SAS HQ.

UK to Italy

Terrorists are holding a wealthy businessman in Vienna, Italy and again the Rainbow team are sent to assist the Italian police. The only details I have are that you leave a UK airport in a commercial Boeing 737 for Vienna Airport and return via Heathrow.

USA to UK

A Trans-Atlantic commercial flight from Raleigh (KRDU), Durnham in North Carolina to London Heathrow in a Boeing 757. On board is the Rainbows new chopper pilot, who flies as a passenger in a Puma from near Heathrow (probably Northolt or Hayes Heliport to the North of EGLL-not in X-Plane). The weather is overcast, 1,500 ft ceiling and raining. Welcome to the UK !

Dublin to Gatwick

A ex-KGB spy travels from Dublin to Gatwick on a Boeing 737. This is a nice short hop, takes about 50 minutes.

Secret lab to Kansas City and then JFK

The ex-KGB spy escapes during the night from the secret lab in Kansas in a Saab 340b from an airport 35 minutes from Kansas City airport, where he takes a Boeing 737 to JFK in New York.

Sydney to Alice Springs to Hickham and then Travis AFB

The Rainbow 6 team escape the Olympic games with their captive via a commercial 737 flight out of Sydney to Alice Springs where they take a USAF C-17 to Travis AFB in California, after a refuelling stop at Hickham AFB in Hawaii.

'The Kansas Project' to Manaus, Brazil

Dr Brightling escapes the Kansas facility with 4 Gulfstream IV's to the Brazil project which is 98 miles East of Manaus on a 7,000x300ft runway.

Luton to Fort Bragg

The Rainbow 6 team leave England via a borrowed British Airways 737-700 which takes them to Fort Bragg, Pope Air Force Base at midnight.

Travis AFB to Andrews AFB

Chavez and his group travel across from California to Washington in a VC-20

Pope AFB to Manuas

The entire Rainbow team leave Pope AFB and travel down to Manaus in Brazil in a C5 Galaxy which mid-flight refuels somewhere south of Jamaica. The load includes a Blackhawk helicopter along with all the explosives, weapons and computer equipment.
