I caught the ferns bug in 1967 when I discovered Edward Step's Wayside and Woodland Ferns in Lowestoft, took
it to the English Lake District and and identified the hard fern and lady fern. Later that summer, I started my first job, met Martin Rickard there and was easily pursuaded to join the British Pteridological Society.
