The Brunels

In the past, unlike Germany, France and America, there has been a tendancy in Britain to regard engineering as a subordinate branch of science. In recent years, however new technologies seem to be bringing some change in this perception.

If, when considering engineering, the words innovation and productivity come to mind it would be fitting to apply them in full to the careers of Marc Isambard and Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Their achievements were immense in that they stradled the fields of civil, structural, mechanical and marine engineering. Their ability to translate thought into action must, surely, underline the essential difference between science and engineering.

If the status of engineering is to be further improved there need be an awareness, with the layman and other professionals, of its 'art' of involving imagination and flair in the application of scientific knowledge. This 'art' of engineering is no better expressed than in the achievements of the "Brunels".
