I have just been looking at your photos of Troedrhiwgwair. My father Dick Waters was born there in 1904 and my Gran, Kate appears in your photo of the post office.
Thanks for the site.

Not a bad site, some spelling mistakes, less than tredegar.co.uk but still need correcting....yellow writing on a white background is not good, not enough contrast some monitors will not see it, try blue....Great photographs, can we see some of the older buildings in the town, maybe a bit of the history of how the town started, which shops came first and what did they sell ? what was the first bank to realise it was worth building there ? when did they open a post office ? that sort of thing.

I am doing some digging for my friend John Rushton, now in his late 70s whose father Brindley S Rushton lived at No 45 4th Row Tredegar age 12 in 1901. His parents were Samuel Rushton and Elizabeth Williams and we are keen to find more of Elizabeth who unfortunately died before the 1901 Census, I believe in 1900. Would anyone be able to look at the 1891 Census on our behalf? We are in Yorkshire now as Brindley came to Yorkshire to play Rugby League, but the Welsh link is still talked about.

Great website and lots of information.
I was born in Tredegar, St. James' hospital.
I am tracing my family history and need to know what the fiche number is for the area of Troedrhiwgwair for the 1871 census.
I am trying to find Thomas Harris and his wife Maria(nee Smith). They were the parents of Maria Harris (my great grandmother). Maria was born in 1872 in Troedrhiwgwair and I'm hoping that her parents were living in the area a year before her birth during the 1871 census.
Thanks

I was looking on the internet for info about Brunel. I had just heard on the (French) radio that Brunel was French and was very intrigued since I knew that he was in the list of "Great Britons". Your page was very useful. I would be interested to know if he was really British and did he retain his French nationality. Present laws say that all children born of Frenchmen whether at home or abroad are of French nationality.... If anyone's interested or has any info, please let me know... Thanks for your informative page. I'm originally from Cheshire by the way.

I will return to you page again as I am training as a tour guide at Greenwich Community College. The subject I, with two others Jill & Chris, will present to our fellow student will include a talk on a painting by Parrot of the Great Eastern on the day it tested its boilers. My aspect is on the Social history of the workers and those that came to see it, within the picture which is a record of the event. So why was it painted? Little is know about the picture? Ware were they trained to work with metal and the new method of building and what was their social standing? The picture shows the turning point from sail to steam. The place is Millwall docks on the Thames, close to the tunnel under the Thames. Were the comments on BBC correct when they said he often developed other engineers ideas?

EVERYONE. Please be aware that people coming on to this guestbook from Africa are scam artists. They will steal your e-mail addresses and then send you e-mails to ask for help transfering money out of Nigeria or other god forsaken african country. Please be aware that this is a fraud. More information is available at www.FBI.gov. These African lads have no values...they will kill their own mothers if she has 2 dollars on her. Please visit www.scamorama.com to see how these black ugly guys play out the fraud. They will not only rob you of your earnings but will also kill you if possible. So many people have experienced this. go to the site and read about it. If you get an e-mail from these people, inform your local police or FBI at www.FBI.org. they have special contact information for Nigerian 419 scam. Please let all your friends know about this.

My main research at present is my BELT family which hails from Pembrokeshire but after further investigation I have now linked the occupants of 33 Himalaya Range in the 1881 census to their roots back in Pembrokshire. The family also appear in the 1871 census at 37 Himalaya Range, I am not sure about the 1891 and 1901 yet. This family in Himalaya Range also spread to Pennsylvania,USA by the 1920's, possibly 3 sons emigrated there after WW1 and there is family there today.
Anyone who has possible Belt connections feel free to contact me anytime.

Lost you due to computer problems but found you again. I'm a retired computer technician and cause myself all manner of problems trying out new software. Busy with work on house, car, garden so can't spend much time on my many interests which includes boxing. I'm a member of the Nottingham Ex-boxers and have met members of the South Wales Ex-boxers at our annual convention at Nottingham. I see from some of your pictures that there are people with surnames like mine or very similar. I have had a half hearted attempt to do a family history but you soon run into money requests. My daughter is a very successful primary school teacher near Newport,South Wales and only recently met a family with exactly the same spelling of my surname there. My father said that his father's brother was in South Wales but who moved where I don't know.
I like the many interests you write about since they are similar to my own but I don't have your persistence put my thoughts into words.
Thank goodness I found your site again. I really had no clue where to start looking but the aol search engine came up trumps.
Best of luck and goodbye for now!
Les.

just read your page on ulcers The doctor has said he thinks my son who's 40 has an ulcer. He is waiting fo a visit to a hospital for tests in about 16 days time. Meanwhile he is in a lot of pain the doctor has prescribed the same drug that has cured your ulcer. Hope it works soon any tips on what he can or cannot eat would be helpful. i'm afraid to say he is a drinker and a smoker.

Very nice site, I am currently living in Indiana USA, born in Ebbw Vale. I was looking at one of the photo's of the Fountain Inn (photo, DartC1) and recognized the man in front with the blue jacket and blond hair, Ray Jones......
I worked with him at the BSC Ebbw Vale works in the slabyard scarfing bay. I went by the nickname "TOC", had some great memories and drank a few gallons of beer in our time, Ray always mentioned the Fountain. good luck to you.

very interesting,Brian Its a good idea in these days of unknown, and maybe not so many fellow enthusiasts as you and I.My interest is the Brunel;s, all three, because, Isambard had two sons. Henry Marc, and Isambard the third, who as you may know, assisted John Barrie with the building of the Tower Bridge in London. But Henry never had the flair to follow the rest of the family into Engineering.
I have written 'The Brunel Diaries' accounting for all the working days of the carreers of the family Brunel.
Best of luck Brian, before I close, my diaries include the Broad Gauge line from Briton Ferry to Glyncorrwg, and in some parts visible means of the stone sleepers still are visible, and some of the rails are being used for fence posts in the upper Afan valley. Cheers, Fred

Hi Brian,
I've just discovered your web page and found it most interesting. I have recently acquired a refurbished PC which I passed on to my granddaughters and they are looking to expand the available RAM(from 32Mb). Unfortunately, the system has no identifiable "maker" e.g. Dell, Tiny, Packard Bell, etc., so I am having to go into case to identify the type of memory used.
Your page seems a good starting point.
Kind regards

Excellent website - glad to have found it. I know that you knew my dad, Cyril Rogers, and he told me you had set up this site. He said he gave you a photo of a clay pigeon shoot held at Troed some time in the 1950s or 60s and that you were going to put it on the site. Is this still a possibility?
I will be visiting again whenever I need a shot of home!

Thanks,

Reading your pages has brought back many memories to myself and my brother Arthur who also lives in NZ. I have two brothers still living in Tredegar, it was a surprise to see them have a mention on your site. My brothers were born in Troed I was born at Rhyd terrace, our granfather was Tom Waters famed for his greenhouse! My memories of Troed seem to be centred on the chaple by the "duck pond" and of Sunday visits to various relatives. I recognise a few names from your guestbook including "boys" who went to the Tech with me. Brian thank you for your work.

Norma M. Whitecar at 23:12:5 Friday April 6 2001
Hi Brian,
I have been trying to find the burial place of an ancestor who married my great-great grandmother, Mary Dary Roberts, sometime between 1830 and 1861. Haven't had much luck on either their marriage - where or when it took place, or the burial place of Robert, who died 8 Jan. 1870 in Bedwellty, Tredegar (41 Morgan Street). The death was registered at St. George's on Church Street, but Vicar Davis of that church advised they had no burial ground. Cefn Golau and Dukestown didn't keep records until after 1875 and I don't know names and addresses of other church graveyards in that area. Nothing found so far agrees on date of Robert's birth. In 1870 his death certificate said he was 63, but 1861 census showed him 68 in March of that year. Record of his step-grandson showed him born "about 1890."
Robert was born in Dolgelly. I found birth records there for a Robert Pugh born in 1890 and one in 1898. Have looked every place I can think of and written letters to everyone I could think of, including newpaper library in England, with no results in finding burial place& headstone inscription or marriage record. Checked British Registration started in 1837 for marriage, but only record of a Mary Darcy Roberts and Robert Pugh (Festinog 1838)turned out to be to someone else for each of them (in same volume and on same page.) Any suggestions?

Good day Brian
Greetings from Canada
I have enjoyed your web page
and certainly enjoy reviewing the 1881 census
I was particularily interested in the address
of 45 Himalaya Range in Bedwellty Monmouth
Would this address be in the area also known
as Quakers Yard, If so I believe that there may be
a relationship to the Howells and to the neighbours
the Prothero's listed as residing there during that census
Wonderful web page

Hi, I just finished reading your article on ulcer treatment.
First, the article was very informative, I also want to mention that
my son was diagnosed with an ulcer 3 years ago, when he was
17, and his gastroenterologist immediately suggested he be tested
for the stomach virus, and that treatment was possible to remove
the ulcer. I live in Israel and my experience here was very positive.
My son has been symptom free for now, but a month ago developed pain again.
We are waiting for the lab results to see if the virus is back. Do you
have any suggestions for me? I also plan to visit your other sites on Whales.
I have a pen pal from Whales and would like to find our more about where she
lives. Keep up the good work. Thanks.

My great great grandparents, Mary Harding and Thomas Cox, lived on Brury Hill in Ebbw Vale, Tredgar in the mid-1850's. At least one of their children, Mercy, was born at Thiery Hill there. (If anyone can confirm or correct the names of these darn hills, I'd really appreciate it!) Thomas was a coal miner and so was his son, John Cox. John moved his family first to Treherbert/Treorchy, then, after the death of his wife, to Vandling Pennsylvania. I've never been to Wales, but we're planning to take a trip there with my parents in October. We're all very excited about it -- it looks like a beautiful place ... very much like Pennsylvania!

A great site. Do you have any information on "The Garn", which was a burned down smallholding near The Mountain Ash Pub between Tredegar and Abertysswg? My Grandfather, James Evans, was a miner and also bred pit ponies there. Any information, particularly photographs would be much appreciated. I was in Tredegar, yesterday but couldn't find much in the library there.
Thomas West in Ames, Iowa, USA at 1:24:24 Saturday September 30 2000
We are very interested in genealogy. My grandfather and great-grandfather lived in Tredgar, before moving to the United State. First, my great-grandfather Jacob West was born in 1844 and his son Joesph (my grandfather) was born in 1871. They were coal miners and eventually (late 1800's) moved to Hiteman, Iowa, USA. I would like to correspond with anyone living in Wales, who bear the West name and could help me find the ancestors of Jacob.

Christopher Meredith in Brecon at 11:49:7 Wednesday June 14 2000
Dear Brian,
I enjoyed the information about and pictures of Troedrhiwgwair very much. My mother was Joyce Roberts who was brought up in No. 15, Troed. Her name appears on your pages. I remember some of the neighbours, Cliff Dando and Auntie Aida, very clearly from my childhood.
Your browsers may be interested in some of my books, which have strong Tredegar connections. My novel 'Shifts' (Seren Classics, Bridgend 1997) is set in a fictionalized version of Tredegar and Ebbw Vale in the late 70s. My collection of poems, 'Snaring Heaven' (Seren, Bridgend 1990) has a number of Tredegar-set poems and a sequence of six about Troedrhiwgwair. I've also published a short pamphlet, 'Cefn Golau', in the Gregynog Press 'Places' series (1996, I think).
Greetings to my old schoolfriend Rob Rowlands in Penzance.
Long live Troed. It's good to see Phil Morgan restoring George Wimblet's house there. Here's to the Fountain Inn - long may it quench our thirst.
Thanks for an excellent website. Diolch yn fawr iawn.

Sadly, Tredegar will always bring back unhappy memories for me.
Tredegar can claim to have produced, without doubt, THE most beautiful girl in the world, Sally-Ann. Unfortunately, I fell hopelessly in love with her and she completely screwed up my life - hence the unhappy memories.
Useless information - I once did a gig at the NCB Club.

Her husband, Albert(Alburn)Burr, went to America and left her to raise 3 sons. She later married Daniel Lewis and I was amazed to see them mentioned on your website, as having lived in "Armageddon House" and I was also fascinated to read the names of relatives amongst the list of residents at Treodhiwgwair House. Dear Brian, An excellent and most informative web site. I am currently studying in London
and found your site via a search on Joseph Lister....which by the way was very helpful to
me when writing my essay. I would just like to comment that Helicobacter pylori is a well
researched topic in the medical world and a lot is now known on the subject...but the
triple therapy of drugs you refer to obviously now works. Being HP+ does mean a greater
susceptability to gastric and duodenal ulcers aswell as wel as certain oncological
conditions...but nontheless a very interesting area of research and medical study.

Hi Brian, Just new to the network, and still learning to surf. Both myself and my wife
Marillyn (nee Kinsey) are Tredegar exiles, we moved to Carluke, Lanarkshire Scotland in
1986. My first email some weeks ago produced amazing results mainly due to my wife's
maiden name (Kinsey - Walter Street). However I would like to hear from some of my family
or know more about them, as they originated from Troedrhiwgwair. My great grandmother
lived in "Troed" and had sons Bill- my grandfather, Mick, Ivor (Slaggo),Dai.
Thereafter my info. ceases - but I understand our family has connections with the
Gardners' - would you be belonging to my family. My parents are David Davies (deceased)
/Vilma Davies (nee Frowen). My mother still lives on Park Hill, but, tragically my father
was killed in 1988 while visiting us in Scotland. I would be most grateful if anyone can
fill in the gaps in the Davies family - particularly from "Troed." Prior to
moving to Carluke Marillyn and I lived in 18, Greenfield Terrace, we have two children
Julie (25) and Paul (22). Great page and info. hope to hear from you.

Hi, i'm looking for info. on one of Brunel's assistants on the 'great Eastern' project.
His name is Henry Wakefield, and he has been pictured with Brunel at the launch of the
Great Eastern when it was finally, at last launched! If you have any info, or links that
would help me out it would be greatly appreciated. I am doing this research for my
parner's grandfather, who is a retired Engineer (as I also currently am in engineering).
We think that Henry Wakefield may have been a relation of his. Any assistance you may be
able to give would be great. Regards...Rick.

Hi Brian: Nice site. Found you via "Ask Jeeves" search engine. I'm interested in

maybe you can help. 1. What exactly do radio consist of? Are they whole atoms? Electrons?
If they are electrons, in what way do they break away from their original atoms? What's
the force that would cause this to happen? 2. How can they pass through stuff without (a)
damaging or altering the stuff they pass through (like people, for instance) and (b) why
don't they get easily deflect when they come into contact with other stuff? Hope you can
help. Thanx. Bob

and says that Joseph Meister "remained custodian of the Pasteur Institute for the

not parting with the keys. Correct? The book also has a chapter on Fleming and discovery

Thank you for posting your interesting colletion of knowledge to the net. I got a
"hit" to your page after doing a search for ulcer information. I have chronic
stomach pain and recently had an endoscopy that revealed a red and inflamed stomach with
possible duodenal ulcer, but no h.pylori was found on a biopsy. I was thinking about
taking the regime of antibiotics you mentioned anyway, thinking that at worst it wouldn't
hurt anything. The doctor has me on carafate. I have a good diet, don't smoke or drink and
I am thinking that something must be causing the irritation, and maybe it is h.pylori.
Glad to hear your are doing better, as h.pylori is associated with stomach cancer. Live
long and prosper Brian...

On page: http://web.ukonline.co.uk/b.gardner/jenner.html, you indicate that Edward Jenner
" Continuing with his experiments, Jenner reported his results to the Royal Society.
They considered, however, that he should not risk his reputation by presenting something
"so at variance with established knowledge". " Where does this quote come
from? I am researching Jenner and would like to verify this. I have seen the quote
before...

Nice page! I had a friend who had ulcers for 27 years=went through all the Tagamet etc
routines and in 1996 went though the antibotic routine and in 12 days no longer had
"ulcers" Strange how the Aussie doctor had so much problem
"convincing" the medical pro's about h.pylori, but its typical as history has
shown (W.Harvey=blood flowed in the body-W.Roentgen=use of x-ray-Lister=antiseptics it
always seems to take years to catch on Tagamet sales sure went to hell!

Brian, thanks for all your effort. My mother's family came from Tredegar. many buried in

Iron Works. Her family were stone masons and probably built many of the structures in the
town. I visited there about 14 years ago. Found the area quite beautiful from where you
