General

The site has a homepage and six main sections which are listed in the menu at the side of this page. The homepage can be reached by clicking on the compass that appears in the top left-hand corner of all pages except those with the largest images.

Navigation of the site should, I hope, be simple and intuitive using the menus at the left-hand side of most pages and at the top of the pages with the largest images. A sub-menu will appear below the main menu when you visit the general maps and tables or the county and regional maps sections. All webpage designers think their sites are easy to navigate but they are often wrong. Please accept my apologies in advance for any shortcomings you find and contact me with any error reports, comments or suggestions as to how the site might be improved.

Images

Images of the maps and tables are in three different sizes:

  • Mini images are 200 pixels wide and give a general impression of the map or table, although the wording is not readable. Clicking on any mini image leads to a page with a midi image.

  • The size of the midi images has been chosen so that their width fits, with a menu beside them, into a browser window on a monitor with 800x600 screen resolution. A lot of the wording on this size image is readable on screen, although this is dependent upon a number of things - the original text size, the quality of the monitor and the quality of the viewer's eyesight are obvious factors!

  • Maxi images can be accessed from the menu which is always located to the left of a midi image. Their size has been chosen so that their width fits into a browser window on a monitor with 1024x768 screen resolution. These images are JPEG files with sizes of the order of 250-300K so they could take more than a minute to download with a 56K modem.
