County and
Bedfordshire |
The layout of a typical county map or Welsh regional map in Chorographia Brritanniæ is shown below. All the maps have an information panel on the left hand side with details of parliamentary representation, the numbers of cities, boroughs, market towns and parishes and the dates of markets and fairs. Many also give information about the county's rivers. Oxford and Cambridge have lists of their university colleges with the founder's name and date of foundation and Middlesex has information about London, "the most populous & most flourishing city in Europe".
The information panels are unchanged throughout the life of the atlas for most counties, although there are changes to nine after the first state. These changes, together with the alterations to the maps themseves, are listed on the individual county and north and south Wales pages which can be accessed from the menu on the left. All the maps except Yorkshire, which has its title inside a frame at the top of the map, have a title outside the top border. The title is followed, on every map except Middlesex, by an indication of the compass bearing of the county from London, for example "A Map of CHESHIRE North West from London", "A Map of MONMOUTH SHIRE . West from London". Also outside the border at the top of the maps on the right hand side is a plate number. These can be seen on the images on the individual county pages and they are listed on the atlas collation page. Below the bottom border of each map is engraved T. Badeslade delin. on the left hand side and W. H Toms Sculpt on the right hand side. There are minor variations to the punctuation of these signatures. At the centre below the bottom border is the imprint Publish'd by the Proprietors T. Badeslade & W H Toms Septr. 29th. 1741. This is present in the early states and was later replaced by Publish'd by the Proprietor W H Toms Sept. 29.1742. Again there are minor variations to the punctuation of these imprints.
