First state

Scale: English Miles. (20 = 29mm)

The map names about forty-five places in Devonshire and another six outside the county boundary. Several coastal features are also named.

Roads shown are:
1. Bridgwater in Somersetshire to Launceston in Cornwall via Moulton, Barnstable, Torrington, Hatherley and Lyston.
2. Taunton in Somersetshire via Peveril and Columpton to Exeter. At Exeter this road divides into three, one going to Tavistock, one to Plymouth, and the third to Kingward C.

The Tamer river is named. Several other rivers are shown, but they are not named, although there are details of the county's rivers in the left-hand information panel.

Second state

The imprint is unchanged.

About sixty place names have been added together with the names of several coastal features. Peveril has been erased and re-engraved as Peverel to the north-west of its previous position. Columpton has been erased and re-engraved as Colompton to replace Peveril. Bradnich has been added where Columpton was. These changes are shown below (first state on the left).

Roads added are:

2. Exeter to Lyston via Okehampton.
3. Exeter to Axminster via Honiton.
4. Exeter to Taunton in Somersetshire via Bradnich and Colompton.
5. Exeter to Bampton via Tiverton.
6. Exeter to Houlsworthy via Crediton and Hatherley.
7. Crediton to Barnstable via Chimligh.
8. Torrington to Hartland via Biddiford.

PART OF SOUTH WALES has been engraved at the top of the map.

Third state

Imprint changed to:
Publish'd by the Proprietor W H Toms Sept. 29. 1742.

Fourth state

In the left-hand information panel the market days for Plymouth have been changed to Mond. Wed. & Sat. (previously Mond. & Thurs.) and Plymouth Dock Mark Mond. Wed & Sat has been added after the main Plymouth details.
