The Rinky-Dink is presented to the students, and the following topics are discussed.
Energy
Where it comes from, how it is used on the Rinky-Dink, and where it ends up. We explain the principles of sustainable energy, how the bicycle generator works, and then get the students on it to power the sound system and lightbulbs. We can then introduce the topic of...
Efficiency...
...by comparing their energy input when powering 'standard' light bulbs and high efficiency bulbs.
We also compare efficiencies of various machines, (eg. cars, bicycles) to reinforce the ideas of sustainability.
Mechanics:
We explain how the Rinky-Dink was made and how it works mechanically. All gearing and driving mechanisms are visible and understandable.
Electricity:
We explain the 12 volt system, how it is powred, regulated, stored and used.
Environment:
We discuss the impact of various power sources on the environment and what the students could do to cut down on their energy consumption.
Obviously, the presentation varies according to the age, ability and aptitude of the students, and can tie in with any other work they are currently undertaking. We have worked with groups as young as six years old (there is plenty for them to do and see) right up to GCSE students, who may wish to make their own bicycle generator. We advise teachers on possible follow up work.
