The story of "Bristol Blue"

For centuries, Bristol has been the centre of excellence in glassmaking.During the 17th century, bottles and window panes for export to America were the mainstay of the city's glassmaking industry. By the early 18th century the Bristol glassmakers began making fine leaded crystal glass tableware.

From the late 18th century through to the early 1800's, Bristol glassmaking flourished and coloured glass of red, green and blue was produced alongside fine tableware.The term 'Bristol Blue' is thought to have first arisen in the 1760's when William Cookworthy, a Bristol dealer gained a monopoly of the Saxony smalt blue used for colouring glass, after Saxony's war with Prussia. New government taxes being impossed on clear glass at the time also contributed to the move towards coloured glass.
