Blue Circle (Sittingbourne)
Sea Angling Club

Issue 8 01.10.01

The Circular - your monthly newsletter

Here it is at last.......appologies for the non arrival of last months newsletter but I simply forgot about it until the Friday before the match when Ray Hills reminded me that the match was that weekend.....still here it is now with all the news and views you need to know about.

First off is news of events laid on by the Ivy Leaf Club for your diary
1. 29.9 Quiz night...you should of been there I came a close second
2. 8.12 Xmas party.....cost £5 per child for a £10 present from Santa (you can pay for a bigger present if you want) but names are required by end of September - maybe a bit later
3.13.10 Cockney night....knees up mother brown, I'll 'ave a pint o'whelks with a lemonade top etc..
4. 3.11 Provisionally booked for fireworks night to be confirmed
5. 26.12 Boxing day open all afternoon for your delight

Did you all see the advert for the club in the Kent Messenger / Sittingbourne Extra well it certainly brought a good response and we could have a few new members coming along to the next trip out.....mind you I had a few freshwater anglers phone up as well who were disappointed to find out what the 'C' in the advert was meant to mean SEA!!!

Any way the next excursion is to Deal Pier where there have been reports of some nice codling being landed up to about 14lb......but they will of heard we are going down there by now so don't bank on catching any!! We will be fishing on the stem section of the pier so bring that drop net along just in case.

When fishing from a pier it is always a good idea to fish with a longer length of shock leader so that it reaches from your reel into the water so that you wont get the leader knot stuck in your rod rings as you heave that monster up. Don't forget if you catch any thing near 3lb in weight you will most probably lose it if you try to bring it up without a drop net...you have been warned!

Talking about drop nets its always a good idea if you can put some weights in the bottom of the net to hold the net down in the water. The other thing to remember is that you normally want that drop net in a hurry so don't just bring it along and dump it down with all the rest of your gear untangle that rope now before its too late and Mr Cod has swam off elsewhere.

The locals swear by the local yellow tails that they pump at nearby Sandwich Bay (is that because they want to sell them to you?), the experts from the Deal clubs that fish on the corners of the lower decks are often seen to fish with a long flowing trace with about 6" of fresh Devon peelers on a pennel rig however I prefer the cheaper option of plenty of fresh blow lug which I know they will not refuse if they come across it.

At Deal you want to be fishing into the tide so that your baits are pushed down onto the sea bed where all the whiting and codling will be feeding so you want to fish on the Dover side as high tide is at 9.45......well after 9.45 that is. Remember to use long hook lengths or a flowing trace that will keep your baits down on the sea bed where all the fish are. Don't forget there will be plenty of whiting about as well to catch so a little bit of squid or mackerel or herring or ragworm to tip off that lug could work wonders. But remember its not that often you will catch a codling on a fish bait so if you want to catch that record breaker.......

So don't forget the pick up point where we all meet before we travel down together is at the Water Pump in Teynham which is opposite the Dover Castle Pub on the main A2 between Sittingbourne and Faversham.

The next club meeting is on Wednesday 17th October at the Ivy Leaf Club near Sittingbourne Station at 8pm so if I don't see you on the pier I'll see you there.

If you have any queries, you are not sure about anything or you need to know something phone me on the number below and I'll do my best to help.

I'll see you on the beach

John Padmore

Secretary
