The Circular - your monthly newsletter

Well here we go the last chance for you to walk away with a trophy this year and what a venue we have got to decide whose the best of the best - Ramsgate Pier.

Just the name brings up images of fish in my mind. This is a well know spot to locals and people who use it. Results can be patchy with fish being caught sometimes and not at others. Need I say more…..you've got the idea…..I've never fished here and know nothing about the venue.

However that doesn't stop me helping you with a few tips for fishing these piers/new venues. We will be fishing this Saturday evening/night from 16.00- 22.00 so take your light with you. Make sure you're light is working before you go (Bob!!). If any one wants a good light Ray Jolly has a Coleman lamp for sale at about £20 so give him a call for more details. (Its seamless how I introduce these adverts isn't it?).

For any new venue see if you can phone a local tackle shop for advice. Take a variety of baits - I would suggest blow lug will be the most popular bait but take a little bit of rag, squid, mackerel, maybe some sprats etc for some variety because you never know what those fish will fancy.

Other top tips for piers:-

-Take a drop net
-Try fishing straight down the side of the wall
-Best traces concentrate hooks close to the sea bed such as a flowing trace or one up one down patenoster
-Target whiting as the most popular fish to catch with lug tipped with squid
-Use big lug baits for that codling cup
-Fish at the first place the tide hits the wall - that where food for fish will be deposited
-Fish at a bend or next to steps where the tidal direction/flow is altered
-Try to fish the inside end of a walled pier where a tidal eddy forms

That's all for now, tight lines
