The Circular - your monthly newsletter

Here is your newsletter from your club with news and views you need to know.

A bumper pack of bumf this month for you to digest. The important items to note are: -

· The voting forms for Clubman of the Year - vote for the club member you think has done the most for the club this year and return your forms to Nigel Sharrocks if you have not already done so.

· Bring in those cleaned permanent Club trophies to the next club meeting on Wednesday 20th February so we can see what trophies need to be replaced if you can't make the meeting make sure the trophies are returned.

· The February and March venues have been decided as has the singles and pairs knockout first rounds, which are shown in the last minutes enclosed.

· Presentation meal details have been nearly all decided outline details as shown in minutes except we will aim to get there for about 7.15 pm for press photographer at 7.30. Enclosed are the menu choices made. Please indicate your choice of food for each course. Cost will be £10.00 for members, £15.00 for members' guests and kids eating from the Kids menu will be free. It will be a good night out so round up your posse and come along. Numbers, choices and money will be required by the March Meeting on Wednesday 20th.

· Auction for Zziplex Primo rod was deferred until the February meeting so come along and put your bid in for this top-notch rod……fish with this and the fish practically give themselves up!!

· Subscriptions to the club are now due and should be paid by end of March as set out in the AGM minutes.

· February match will be decided upon a points basis outlined by Nigel Sharrocks. (See enclosed list of points per fish to be used - don't forget to bring it to the match!)

Well Mark and Kay Hammond have been putting in a bit of practise down at the Prince of Wales Pier this Sunday and they went fishing there as well. "Loads of whiting (some quite large), pouting, large rockling and a postage stamp dab." And "blokes fishing at very end of pier had some humongous whiting," reported Mark.

So that's basically what will be about for us to catch along with the possibility of a few flounder. Use size 2 or smaller hooks on three hook traces - use longer hook snoods than you would normally use from the beach so that the bait is on the sea bed when fishing from the elevated position on the pier. Don't forget the fish are often straight down the edge of the wall so try fishing away and close to the pier to find where the fish are biting most. Use plastic or French booms for fishing down the wall to spread the baits apart and to prevent tangles.

The fishing has been very patchy by all accounts from contacts down that way. Best baits to use will be lugworm and ragworm. Smaller unclassified species will most probably go for maddies or white rag if you can get it. Remember there is a difference between a 'pouting' and a 'poor cod' but they look very similar pouting = 2 points poor cod = 15 points what the difference is…….?

This is a points match so try and target the fish that will get you the most points to win…..this could be catching plenty whiting which only earn a small number of points each or targeting the fish that will earn you more points such as unclassified fish or bass for example which maybe less numerous on the day.

The Ivy Leaf Club have asked me to remind you that subscriptions to their club are due for renewal….we need to get a few of you to join / renew!!!! Its only about £7 and you save that if you only buy a pint on each club meeting so I would encourage you to join…we don't want to upset them!!
