The Circular - your monthly newsletter Hope you all enjoyed the Presentation evening I thought it was a nice change to have a sit down .one thing I thought of afterwards was did 'we' leave a tip for the waitresses/chef? Reg should have the insurance with The UKSF now so you can all breathe a sigh of relief when I start spraying my casts about!! I've had a letter from the NFSA saying that they are having trouble negotiating insurance renewals with their company because of Sept 11th effect on third party insurance .anyway Here are a few little tips picked up along the way about the fishing at Dungeness:- 1. To get up the concrete road next to the boats you have to be a member of Dungeness Angling Association to get a key to get access or you have to wait by the gate to get Rodney Clifton to let you in!! 2. Expect to catch dabs, whiting, pouting, rockling and an early Bass for good measure 3. Best bait will be lugworm 4. High tide on the 20th will be about 5pm so we'll be fishing over high water and all the way down when the fishing is at its best so some would say!! 5. Don't forget to test your lamp before you go and replace those worn out batteries ..it can be very dark at Dungeness especially when the lighthouse light has just gone past 6. Best time to fish...3 hours up to high water and 2 hours after in a south westerly wind 7. The beach near the boats give shelter to fish in very strong south westerly winds 8. Tide runs from west to east on the flood 9. Summer species...pouting, sole, bass, mackerel 10. Winter species...whiting, codling, dab 11. Crabs should be starting to peel soon but I've never had much luck with them at Dungeness 12. Best fishing for sole is at night with the period around dawn being best if you can stay up that long or get up that early!! 13. Best bait to use all year in my opinion is lugworm...locals swear by local Dungie Black Lug (which they sell!!!) but fish with plenty of blow lug and you cant go far wrong 14. The Point is where two tides meet and deposit all that food the fish are looking for. Line up the old and new lighthouses to locate the Point or Dustbin 15. Dungeness is a private estate and people live near the car parking places so remember not to make any noise late at night, don't slam car doors, boots etc. 16. Fish feed most when the tide is running....fish with a grip lead to avoid tangling with other anglers and having your trace washed up on the shore 17. This match is to be decided upon by total length so don't forget to bring those fish measures 18. Keep your eyes open for a trailer wheel size 500 x 10 as I need one 19. Saturday night can get crowded at "Dungy" so try fishing mid week when there wont be so many people trying to catch your first double figure cod 20. Tip lug baits with white ragworm to make sure the fish take the business end of the hook 21. As small fish will be the order of the day use a three hook paternoster to catch loads of 'em 22. If the fish are only being caught a long range try to increase the distance you cast (by learning to cast correctly with Kent Sportscast 07904 239722) by reducing the number of hooks and baits you are fishing with .use a single hook with a small bait to try and reach the fish Don't forget the next club meeting is on Wednesday 24th April at The Billet at 8pm I'll see you on the beach John
