The Circular - your monthly newsletter

This month we start with a big thank you to the members who organised and supported the recent treasure hunt from the reports I have heard it was a good success........someone was moaning about some of the clues but he always moans!!! A full report will be given at the next club meeting at the Billet on Wednesday 24th September at 8 pm.

This month we will be travelling to fish at Deal pier (see minutes for times etc). Last night I was at the NFSA SE Divisional Delegates meeting and picked up a few good tips to pass on. At the moment they are catching mainly bass, codling (which they have been catching for the past 2 weeks or so), whiting, pouting and scad at night.

The technique they use to catch the scad is quite clever......use a three hook trace with booms on with size 2 hooks fishing straight down by the pier legs .......not much unusual about that I hear you say .........but they fish this under the light of a Coleman lamp or powerful torch which is hung from a rope near the top of the water which attracts the fish to the light. They can bee seen swimming around under the light so the trace is just hung into the water bait with rag or lugworm and you haul them in!!! My top tip for this technique is that if you see you light go out you have most probably lowered your lamp too far into the water!!! Try using some ground bait such as old fish or old bait in a bag under the lamp to attract more fish?

This match is a species match so we will be getting points for the various types of fish caught, and if I had that points list to hand I could tell you what species gets what points but as I haven't I can't tell you but you want to fish for the fish that will get you the most points...scad will get you big points....and unclassified small ugly fish....gobies, blennies etc that can be caught between the pier legs also get big points. It will pay to move around the pier to catch different types of fish......apparently the pouting (low points) are nearer the shore and the scad are being caught towards the end of the pier. Take a variety of baits if you can.....some lugworm, ragworm, mackerel, squid etc to give you a chance of getting a variety of fish. Give Jason Mann a call and he might be able to get you some bargain bait.

I'll see you on the beach
