The next venture down to the waters edge is coming up soon so get that bait ordered now. We shall be raiding Shakespere beach at Dover to see what this deep water venue has to offer. This beach forms a 'tidal' bay that collects all that the sea can offer which is swept along from Folkestone and bumps into the Admiralty Pier. There are big bass caught here every year that patrol along the deep water beach to have a go at any thing that has been swept along the beach. It may be a little too early for the big bass to appear but there should be some schoolies to be caught. They will be chasing the smaller fry fish that are swept along. These smaller fry will also be chased by the mackerel that have been caught on the pier already this year so take along those mackerel feathers just in case they come along just before the sun sets. We should also catch pouting, whiting, rockling, flounder and maybe a plaice. Lugworm and ragworm will be the staple fish takers but if the bass are there peeler crab may be successful and could pick you up the odd eel as well if they are wandering past. This is a steeply shelving shingle beach that can be difficult to fish especially if the wind has whipped up a large swell, so be prepared for a change of venue if the wind is blowing on shore. Don't forget that the weather can be deceptive this time of year and very changeable so don't forget those warm clothes and waterproofs, take a towl with you to dry off your hands so they don't get too cold, prepare for the worst and be thankful if we get better!! Check out those lamps now to make sure they work - it's a long time since you last used them and make sure those torch batteries are working - take some spares you cant be too careful. Talking of spares, make sure you have plenty of spare traces made up, it's a time consuming job to do in the dark on the beach. If you need some spare trace making materials phone David Allen for some bargain bits and pieces and if you need some value for money bait give Jason a call as soon as you can. Don't forget its Rogation Sunday as well this weekend so don't forget to spare a thought for those who have gone before us so that we can enjoy what we have today - so sayeth John the Fisherman. See you on the beach
