Dengemarsh Dengemarsh is located between the power stations at Dungeness and Galloways beach near Camber Sands It is a shallow beach which is well known for its summer and autumn Dover sole fishing. It becomes shallower further towards Galloways beach. I've always found it fishes better from the the Diamond (a diamond shaped board supported on a stilt structure) located near the end of the power station road to the "track" that leads to the beach from Lydd The target species between June and October is Dover Sole but the venue is also popular for mackerel fishing when they are about in the summer. From September whiting usually start to put in an appearance, but small whiting have remained throughout the year this year. Late October through to December sees codling being caught. Dungeness black lug is the top bait to use throughout the year so the local diggers say but I have found that a good supply of fresh blow lug does the business most of the time. Small Lugworm, or "bullets" as they are called, are best for the sole which are also taken on small ragworm. During the day, distance casting is often the best tactic but at night, fish are often found over high water at the base of the beach where the sloping shingle meets the flat beach 30-50 yards from the high water mark. Bass can also be caught here and these can patrol close in to the beach. A three hook paternoster with size 1 to 4 hooks is the best trace to use. The match winner will catch many small fish including whiting, pouting, rockling, dabs and the occasional sole. Local black lug can be ordered from Eric Whenday, Allandale, Dungeness Road, Lydd, Tel:01679 20049. |
