After a brief illness of only eight days, the death took place at Calcot Farm, last week, of William Hebdige, at the age of 70 years. The deceased gentleman was a member of an old and respected Botley family, and his boyhood days were spent with his parents at Mark's Farm. Anita has a copy of her baptism in Barton I.O.W (7.4.1864) To James and Mary Ann(Smith).

Robin's notes:

On looking for Mary Pidgley's birth certificate - which hasn't as yet been found - Frank Bayford found one for Mary Pigley born 20 December 1848, Bartons Village, Whippingham, Isle of Wight, to William Pigley (occupation chair bottomer) and Sarah formerly Scorey. (Exact spelling is not a major issue taking into consideration that maybe a clerk spelled phonetically - accents vary! and a number of
people were illiterate.)) One wonders if she is the mother of our Mary who, on the 1881 census,
had her birth place as Newport, Isle of Wight?

One scenario could be that Mary born in 1848 could have given birth to Mary born in 1865 when seventeen and let her parents raise her and young Mary grew up thinking that her grandparents were her parents which could have been why the father's name on her marriage certificate was entered as William.

Update on the above information from Frank Bayford who is in contact with David Pedgley. David has done a considerable amount of research on the Pidgley/Pedgleys and this information has changed mine, e.g. Mary Pidgley has her father's name as William, but according to her sister Elizabeth's marriage certificate, their father's name is James and his occupation is a labourer. The mystery deepens - why did she tell her children that her father's name was William and that he was a seaman? Did Mary have a different father from Lizzie and Olive/Rose??????

According to the Census Mary's birth year should be 1865 or 66.

Taken from the local Botley newspaper, February, 1928.

Mrs M. Hebdige's Death:

The death took place at Calcot Farm, Curdridge, on Wednesday week, of Mrs Mary Hebdige, wife of Mr William Hebdige, after an illness of only a few week's duration. Mrs Hebdige was 63 years of age. The Hebdige's are a very old Botley family, who resided at Botley Farm many years ago, and as other members of the family are buried at the Old Botley Church, the remains were brought there for internment on Tuesday afternoon. The funeral service, which is the first held in the Old Churchyard since the end of 1916 was conducted by the Rev G. Salway (Rector of Botley). In addition to the family mourners, a number of local friends gathered for the service. The deceased lady has left a grown-up family. The very choice floral tributes laid on the grave were inscribed: To my ever loving wife, from Will; from Doff, Billie and Olive; Janet, Harry and grandchildren; Elsie and Will; all at Durley Halt; Mrs W. Houndsome; Mr Bernard Maybury; E.M. and W.H. Hebdige; Dr Maybury and family; Mabel and George; Dorothea, Mary and Betty; Nell, Arthur and family.

1881 Census: Culverley Farm, Denny Lodge, Hampshire, UK.

Jane was said to have died some time before 1991 and her daughter Sarah went to live at Manor Farm Cottage. If Jane died in 1895 Sarah must have moved to Manor Farm before.

Death Notice copied from local paper 1921. (Robin)

Another parishoner has passed away in Mr. H.C. Hebdige on March 26th. Although in failing health he was at his work as usual on that day. An inquest was held at the Catherine Wheel on the 29th before Mr P.B. Ingoldby, County Coroner, without a jury. Gertrude Edith Hebdige, the wife of the deceased, stated that at 9.40 pm the previous Saturday (26th) the deceased went from the house to the woodhouse to get some wood for the following morning's fire, and about a quarter of an hour later, having not returned, she went to look for him, and found him in a sitting position in the woodhouse dead. She immediately sent for Dr. Alfred Spearman Pern who stated that in his opinion death was due to chronic cystitis and hydronephroses combined. A verdict in accordance with the doctor's evidence was brought in.

He was an engineer at Botley Mill, a building mentioned in the Domesday Book.

Percival Wilkins Bayford

Emigrated to New Zealand about 1908.

Robin's notes:
This is a letter Percival (my grandfather) wrote to his mother while staying with Mrs Boyden (whom I intend to investigate) at Norfolk House, Bishops Stortford, Hertford.

I think he was between 8 - 10 years judging by the way he wrote.

"Dear Mother.

I hope you are quite well I am quite well. Mrs Boyden is spring-cleaning are you? I am coming home tomorrow week (Thursday) I am going with Mr Boyden up to his business and then can go with your loving daughter Noo(a)h. Mrs Boyden says she will write as soon as she can. There is a fowl sitting on 18 eggs and will have chicks soon. Little Lenny is so glad because Mrs Boyden says she will have Dolly if she will come, little Lenny sends his love to Dolly and says he hopes she will come. I got into such a bother for going on the stack of wood one day when we had a half holiday and went into the field and Len said to us we must keep on the stack and so we kept on them and broke the tops off the sticks by sitting down and Mrs Boyden could see us and Mr Boyden or the governor was cross but it was a mistake Mrs Boyden did not say so and so I did not get in trouble.

I remain your loving son

Percy

Choir

Last week Mr Percy Bayford sailed for New Zealand. He (like his two brothers) rendered good service in the Choir as boys. Our good wishes go with him, that he may be successful in his new career, and associate himself with Church work in his new home.

WM Rich
Warden

According to Dorothy Harris/Bayford made he way through North America to New Zealand where he worked as a salesman and at one stage lost his wares that were being shipped out when the ship was hit by a torpedo or bombed.

He met Mary Hebdige in New Zealand, maybe in Dunedin, as she, from reading her post cards seems to have worked her way down the North Island from Gisborne (C/- Mrs Richards, Pearl Villa opposite Garrison Hall, Gisborne PB, Pukehou (near Hastings - C/- Mrs W T Williams, Pukehou Hawkes Bay) dated 5 October 1911 - across Cook Strait to Greymouth (C/- Post Office, Greymouth). The next postcard is when she is Mrs P W Bayford C/- Post Office, Ranfurley Otago Central, New Zealand dated 15 April 1915.

Percival and Mary ended up living in Napier where he was Superintendent of the T & G Insurance Company. Around 1940ish The Bayfords came to Wellington where they stayed till they died.

Mary Jane Hebdige

1908 (Emigrated) - New Zealand.
1969 (Death) - Wellington, New Zealand.

Lived at Hill Farm for a while, which was on the border of Durley and Botley, and was destroyed in WW2. She emigrated to New Zealand about 1908.

Robin has photos of her at Calcot Farm.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Robin's notes:

Hill Farm where Mary Jane Hebdige was born in 1890 was destroyed during the second World War 1939-45 together with occupants who had harboured there. Two farm cottages were built on the land later. Hill Farm is on the border between Durley and Botley.

Botley history:
Roman occupation 45 AD, Roman army withdrawn 475 AD
Viking River Raid 1001 AD, Saxon occupation 1066
Norman Conquest 1086 Domesday mention.
Rev Richard Baker, Rector 1805-1854 old and new churches
Canon Morley Lee, Rector 1854-1903

Together over a hundred years these two left a mark on the community. Baker is credited with having the new Botley church built. Morley Lee gave considerable gifts to the Parish and is credited with opening the village school. The old Botley church, circa 13th century, where John and Jane Hebdige are buried was for a number of years in ruins. In 1997 when it was visited the grounds were cleared and the church restored. John's stone confirms his death as being 20-1-83 aged 51 and behind John's gravestone, in the back left hand corner is the grave stone of Mabel Simmons, aged 9 years, John and Jane's grand- daughter, born to their daughter Jane who married a Mr Simmons.
