This tree has been compiled with the help of many contributors. Sincere thanks to all, and apologys to those whose information has not been added yet.
Photos of individuals can be found in their Scrapbooks. To see who has them click the "ScrapBook" link in the left menu. Scrapbooks can only contain a limited amount of text so I am adding feature pages containing a more detailed mix of notes, photos and links. These pages are listed to the right of their Scrapbooks, but are presently very few.
NOTE: The Main Menu (Top Left) will not work when you are in a scrapbook. You will have to use your browser's BACK button to exit or use the "Exit Scrapbook" link below or here.
Details and photos of individuals labelled as living are automatically filtered out of the Tree, however a separate list is available here for living people who have permitted or asked for their details to be published.
If you find any errors or would like to update your line please let me know. Bean

Thomas Coates: age 69; born Cowden, Kent; Glove & Legging Manufactures
Harriet Coates: age 64; born Hartfield, Sussex, Kent
Adin Coates: age 32; born Cowden, Kent; Draper
Percy Coates: age 25; born Cowden, Kent; Glove & Legging Manufactures
Dorothy M. Coates: Granddaughter age 9; born London Kensington Rd
Notes from Ross Vicars: (Nov 2002)
Adin left Brenchley in the 1880's and went to Rhodesia. There he was in the Mounted Police and later moved to Pretoria where he ran a draper's store. He enlisted during the Boer War and had the distinction of being (with Col Lionel James) the first people out of Ladysmith when the relief came.
The effects of Ladysmith affected him greatly and he returned to England in 1900.Extracts from Col. Lionel James' autobiography, mentioning Adin, can be found Here
He married in 1901 and in 1902 bought his first shop in Yalding - the building is now called Adin Coates house and is the Library. Further shops followed and by the 1930's he had businesses in Yalding, Edenbridge, Tenterden, Leigh and Rye.
The businesses were run by his four sons but he remained at the helm for many years - he was still Chairman and attending board meetings at 97.
He died in 1969 aged 100 and is buried with Bertha in Yalding Cemetery - just yards away from his first shop. The Tenterden shop still carries his name and although the premises are still family owned, no members of the family remain connected to the business. His second wife "Aunt Gerry" as we called her - was in fact Grace Moon and was related (cousin) to his first wife Bertha. I also remember an "Aunt Babs" who was a great friend and cousin of my Grandmother Madeline - Babs was a nickname and she was also called Bertha Moon.
Update from Ross, December 2002:
Mum now recalls that Gerry (Grace) was related to the Norman side of the family - not the Moon. She is still sure that Gerry's mother was called Adelaide and thinks she married one of Sarah Jane's brothers. I know that Sarah Janes parents were William and Eliza (he was a tenant farmer in Waldron near Uckfield) but that is all I have - I know of no brothers or sisters but have not really researched that line of the family
Possibly Kathleen Ellen Sweet

An article about Thomas by his niece, Lavinia Coates
My grandfather's first born was Thomas - "The Inheritor" who was the son on whom he focussed all his hopes. Unfortunately, the leather trade, which Grandpa had built up, had no interest whatsoever for Thomas Coates junior. When he left school he was found hidden in corners or under the stairs of the premises immersed in reading tomes of books. My father, his youngest brother, remembers that he resembled Bernard Shaw in character.
Although I had heard that he was accused of embezzling money, and he was sent away from home by his father in disgust, his daughter told me of his later reform. He was converted to Christianity by becoming a Pentecostal. Thomas Coates senior was a strict Calvinist.
After his failure in the leather factory he went to live in London, but again he failed to establish himself financially in a retail leather firm on his own. I understand he appealed to his home several times for financial help. So during his sojourn in London, he had disinherited himself and as a result became a financial disaster in the family.
He married an Irish woman, whose character has remained obscure. When he met her she was thought to have worked in a domestic situation. She suffered from Tuberculosis, from which she finally died quite young. They had three children, one girl and two boys.
One day, there was an urgent call from the police at my grandparent's home in Tonbridge, there being no telephone service. The policeman urged them to go to a house in London, where Thomas and his family were living. My grandparents found a very miserable state of affairs. My uncle was dying of Pneumonia and the children were in a state of starvation and neglect. My grandparents had children of their own living at home and so were only prepared to take the daughter, Mabel, aged five years old. Arrangements were made for the two boys to be cared for in a home.
There is a Thomas Coates, born abt 1855 in Cowden, who was an Insurance Agent, listed in 1881 Census, who was lodging at the residence of William Paul and family at: 11 Calverley St., Tonbridge, Kent.
This may not be the correct Thomas as he is shown Unmarried1901 Census Index: (not checked)

1881 Census: Royal Navy on the ship "Alert"
Ernest COATES, U, Male, 19, Cowden, Kent, England, A BThe "Alert" was engaged on a "scientific voyage of discovery" around the world from 1879 to 1882, so Ernest would have been on this trip. Photos and further details of the nine ships named "Alert" can be found at:http://fwaterfield.tripod.com/hmsalert/alert.html
A painting of Ernest's ship, said to have been done by one of the other officers, was in the posession of Ernest's niece, Lavinia. It is thought to have been either the Alert or Centurion but seems to be a combination of the two or possibly another ship. The painting has a very ornate frame which Lavinia recalled had come from Polynesia. Click the thumbnail below to enlarge, maybe you can identify the ship. A photograph of the crew including Ernest and also Captain (later Admiral) Jellicoe, is in the posession of the Coates family.
Can you identify this ship ?

He was promoted Captain in 1897, and then spent about a year ashore before going out to China as Flag Captain on HMS Centurion. (this may help in identifying Ernest's ship)
Emily King (or Everest or Dance)
Notes from Ross Vicars suggest that Emily is the niece of Harriet Sarah Everest.

Comment from Ross Vicars (descendant of James Everest):
I'm not at all convinced about Inkpen ... I have a copy of a deposition that James Everest made in 1879 in which he states "I was married 53 years ago last July..." that would put his marriage in 1825/26 depending on the exact date of the deposition - I do not have that date.
