J1. SUSANNA POLLARD born BOURN

Susanna Bourn was born around 1789-91, in Warnham, Sussex.1

She married [I4] James Pollard on the 29th April 1813, by licence from the Archdeaconry of Lewes, at St Nicholas's parish church, Brighton, Sussex; she was described as a spinster, of St Nicholas's parish.2

Their children were: Ann (1816), Eliza (1818), Richard (1819), Emma (1822), Martha (1823), Mary (1826), [I3] William (1828), Robert (1831), and David (1834), all births being registered by Surrey & Sussex quarterly meeting.3

Susanna applied to join the Society of Friends in February 1820, and was eventually received into membership in September 1821. She attended Women's Monthly Meeting on a couple of occasions, in 1826 and 1827.3A

In 1832 she was named in James's will.4

In 1841 she lived at Park Farm, Horsham, Sussex; her household included two teenagers named Bourne. In December that year she represented Dorking, Horsham & Guildford Monthly Meeting at Quarterly Meeting in Horsham.. She attended Monthly Meeting several times a year throughout the 1840s, and twice more attended Quarterly Meeting (1847 and 1848, the latter occasion in Brighton).5

In 1851 she still lived at Park Farm. She is described as the farmer of 140 acres, employing three labourers. Her daughter Mary, living with her, is said to have been born in Horsham. The household also included a bailiff, a house servant, and two farm servants.6

She is thought to have found letter-writing something of a task, but clearly possessed a fair number of books.7

Susanna removed from Park Farm, probably by October 1851, and certainly by June 1854, probably to live in Reigate. She died on the 4th May 1856, in the High Street, Reigate, Surrey, after twelve months of bronchitis and general decay. She was buried in the Friends' burial ground at Reigate, on the 11th May.8

Susanna Bourne was the youngest known child of (J2) Richard and (J7) Elizabeth Boarn/Bourn.9

J2. RICHARD BOARN/BOURN

Richard Boarn was baptised on the 16th May 1744, at Horsham parish church.1

Described as a bachelor in the parish of Wisboro' Green, as well as of Slinfold, he married (J7) Elizabeth Penfold on the 8th May 1781 at Slinfold, by licence. Their children were: James (1783), Sarah (1785), Ann (1787) Richard (1788), and (J1) Susanna (cal 1791). All were probably born at Warnham, and the births of most were registered at Horsham General Baptist church.2

In September 1791 he purchased a messuage in Horsham, 'parcel of the tenement called Perry Place', from Robert Hurst. By 1806 this property was rented to an widow named Elizabeth Terry; its ownership gave Richard Bourn the right to vote, and in the election that year he voted for Wilder and Jones. At that date he himself was described as a farmer of Warnham.3

Richard Bourn of Warnham probably died on the 14th August 1815, and was buried at Horsham General Baptist Church on the 18th.4

Richard Boarn was the eldest known child of (J3) John and (J4) Elizabeth Boarn .5

J3. JOHN BOARN

John Boarn may have been born around 1725.1

He married (J4) Elizabeth Holland on the 18th June 1743, at Horsham parish church. Their children were: (J2) Richard (1744), Martha (1745), John (1747), John (1749), and William (1751) (also possibly Sarah, 1762). All were baptised at Horsham.2

A John Bourn witnessed the will of Joseph Potter of Warnham, in 1766.2A

It is possible that this John Bourn was the poor man of Nuthurst who died on the 25th May 1788, and was buried on the 28th May at Horsham General Baptist Church. However, the Horsham ratebooks record a John Bourn, described as poor, living from 1789 to 1793 in a property in East Street, Horsham, rented for 2s. Though there may have been more than one individual of this name, he was certainly dead before the 18th November 1798.3

J4. ELIZABETH BOARN born HOLLAND

Elizabeth Holland was baptised at Horsham on the 9th October 1718.1

She married (J3) John Boarn on the 18th June 1743, at Horsham parish church. Their children were: (J2) Richard (1744), Martha (1745), John (1747), John (1749), and William (1751) (also possibly Sarah, 1762). All were baptised at Horsham.2

'Widow Bourn' was living in East Street, Horsham, in 1794, but had left there by April the following year. But it is not clear whether this is the correct widow Bourn, as noted above.

Elizabeth Bourn either died on the 4th November 1796, a widow of Nuthurst, and was buried at Horsham General Baptist Church on the 6th November, or was buried on the 18thNovember at Horsham parish church.3

Elizabeth Holland was the daughter of (J5) Philip and (J6) Elizabeth Holland .4
