L26. RACHEL WATSON born GRAINGER

Rachell Grainger was born on the 14^th February 1748/9, as recorded by Darlington meeting.¹

She married [L2] Joshua Watson on the 27^th February 1770, at the Friends' meeting house in Raby. Their children were: Joseph, Hannah (1777), Grainger, William, Elizabeth, Sarah (1780), Henry (1782), Hannah (1784), [L1] Margaret (1786), and Rachael (1788); all dated births were at Staindrop. From 1796 to 1823 she is known to have lived at Staindrop. She witnessed her daughter's marriage there in 1798. In early 1823 she was living with her husband and daughter Sarah next door to the Staindrop drapery managed by David Binns; he found them ‘very kind neighbours’, who ‘deeply sympathized’ with him in his difficulties, at the onset saying “I wonder thou does not run away”. Binns considered Rachel and Sarah as among the ‘very worthy’ members of Staindrop meeting.²

She died on 11 May 1826, and her body was buried at Staindrop on the 16^th.^2A

Rachell Grainger was the daughter of [L27] Joseph and [L30] Elizabeth Grainger.³

L27. JOSEPH GRAINGER

Joseph Grainger was born at Raby on 9 February 1718/9.⁰

He married [L30] Elizabeth Coates , after the 3^rd April 1744. Their children were: Caleb (1746) and [L26] Rachel (1748/9); at the latter date she was of Raby.¹

Of Raby in 1748/9 and 1758, he died there on 8 March 1763. He was described in 1770 as having been a merchant of Staindrop.²

Joseph Grainger was the son of [L28] Caleb and [L29] Sarah Grainger.³

L28. CALEB GRAINGER

Caleb Grainger was born at Raby on 21 December 1664.¹

He married [L29] Sarah Coates. Their children were (L27) Joseph (1718/9), Hannah (1721), Hannah (1722), Rachel (1725), Isabell (1726/7), and Caleb (1731). On 23 August 1710, a merchant of Raby, he was one of four new trustees appointed to John Grainger’s Charity. He is recorded as a Friend in Raby from 1714/5 to 1731.²

Of Raby, he died there on 28 February 1736/7.³

Caleb Grainger was the fifth child and second son of [L28A] Henry and [L28B] Ellinor Grainger.⁴

Henry Grainger was born about 1627.¹

He married [L28B] Ellinor ____ before 1654, from which time he lived at Raby, Durham. Their children were: Ann (1654), Elizabeth (1656), Ellinor (cal 1661), Henery (1662), [L28] Caleb (1664), and George.²

He died at Raby on 23 July 1713.³

She died at Raby on 27 April 1705.³

L29. SARAH GRAINGER born COATES

Sarah Coates married [L28] Caleb Grainger. At the births of their children—(L27) Joseph (1718/9), Hannah (1721), Hannah (1722), Rachel (1725), Isabell (1726/7), and Caleb (1731)—she was of Raby.¹

She died at Raby in May 1748.²

L30. ELIZABETH GRAINGER born COATES

Elizabeth Coates was born on the 13^th November 1719, at Lynesack.¹

She married [L27] Joseph Grainger after the 3^rd April 1744. Their children were: Caleb (1746) and [L26] Rachel (1748/9); at the latter date she was of Raby.²

She died on the 13^th February 1758, at Raby.³

Elizabeth Coates was the daughter of [L31] Henry and [L32] Rachel Coates .⁴

L31. HENRY COATES

Henry Coates was born on the 28^th November 1679 at Woodland.¹

He married [L32] Rachel Kay on the 7^th November 1717, at the Friends' meeting house in Lartington. Their children were: [L30] Elizabeth (1719), Kay (1720/1), Joseph (1722), Ebenezer (1724), Sarah (1726), Daniel (1729), and Rachel (1731/2); all were born at Lynesack.²

He was a yeoman, of West Pits, Lynesack.³

Of Linsack, near Raby, he died before 31 July 1773.^3A

Henry Coates was the second child and second son of [L14] George and [L21] Elizabeth Coates.⁴

L32. RACHEL COATES born KAY

Rachel Kay was born at Raby on 4 July 1693.⁰

Rachel Kay married [L31] Henry Coates on the 7^th November 1717, at the Friends' meeting house in Lartington. Their children were: [L30] Elizabeth (1719), Kay (1720/1), Joseph (1722), Ebenezer (1724), Sarah (1726), Daniel (1729), and Rachel (1731/2); all were born at Lynesack.¹

She died on 31 July 1773, and was buried on 1 August at Darlington.^1A

Rachel Kay was the daughter of [L33] Daniel and [L34] Elizabeth Kay.²

L33. DANIEL KAY

Daniel Kay married [L34] Elizabeth ____. Their children were: Katherine (1688), Jane (1690), [L32] Rachel (1693), and Elizabeth (1695). She was of Hegholm, Lartington, during this period. He lived in Hegholm, Lartington, from at least 1688 until his death, which took place on 21 July 1719, the event being recorded by Darlington Monthly Meeting.¹

L34. ELIZABETH KAY born ____

Elizabeth ____ was born in about 1653.¹

She married [L33] Daniel Kay. Their children were: Katherine (1688), Jane (1690), [L32] Rachel (1693), and Elizabeth (1695). She was of Hegholm, Lartington, during this period.²

She died at Raby on 30 November 1698.³
