I25. CATHERINE POLLARD born HUGHESDON

Catherine Hughesdon was born in 1766-7, and baptised on the 12th July 1767 at the parish church of St Nicholas, Deptford, in Kent.1

"A Person not of our Society," and still a minor, she was married "by the Priest" to [I5] Samuel Pollard on the 20th July 1784, at Holy Trinity church, Clapham, in which parish she was then living. Their children were: Mary (1785), Grace (1786), Samuel (1787), [I4] James (1789), Andrew (1790), Thomas (1792), William (1794), Theophilus (1795), Martha (1797), John (1799), Joseph (1801), Frederic (1803), Mary Ann (1805), Josiah (1807); all but Mary are known to have been born in Horsham.2

In April 1794 she applied for membership of the Society of Friends at Horsham, and she was received into membership that September. From then on she took an active part in the meeting, regularly attending Women's Monthly Meeting from 1794 to 1835, and representing Horsham at numerous Quarterly Meetings around Sussex and Surrey from 1800 to 1834. Twice, during 1824, she was one of the two Friends appointed to examine the children at the Friends' School, Islington Road. In June 1825 she was appointed an overseer.2A

She died on the 20th November 1838, at Horsham, of general decay of nature, and was buried in the Friends' burial ground at Horsham on the 25th.3

Catherine Hughesdon was the eldest known child of (I26) Thomas and (I27) Grace Hughesden/Hughesdon.4

I26. (HADDOCK) THOMAS HUGHESDEN/HUGHESDON

Haddock Thomas Hughesdon was so baptised on the 7th September 1746, at St Paul's church, Deptford, Kent.1

He married (I27) Grace ____, though his marriage has not been traced. Their children were: (I25) Catherine (1767), James (1769), Ellis (1771), Eleanor (1773), Haddock Thomas (1775), William (1777), Andrew (1779) and Mary Ann (1781), all baptised at St Nicholas, Deptford. From 1767 - normally referred to as just 'Thomas Hughesdon' - he was working as a blacksmith in Deptford, first in Flagon-row, then from 1777 in King Street.2

He died before the 20th July 1784.3

Haddock Thomas Hughesdon was the second child and second son of (I26A) James and (I26B) Elenor Hughesdon.4

I26A. JAMES HUGHESDON

James Hughesdon was born c. 1724.1

In 1744 he was living at Gravel Pits, Deptford, Kent. In 1755 he was a blacksmith, of Flagon Row, Deptford.2

He apparently married (I26B) Elenor ____ around 1743.3

His body was buried at St Nicholas, Deptford, on 30 November 1788.4

I26B. ELENOR HUGHESDON born ____

Elenor ____ apparently married (I26A) James Hughesdon around 1743. Their children were: Elias (1744), (I26) Haddock Thomas (1746), James (1748), Elizabeth (1749/50), Jane (1755), William (1756), and Samuel (1759); the first four were all baptised at St Paul’s, Deptford, the last three at St Nicholas, Deptford.1

I27. GRACE HUGHESDON born ____

She married (I26) Thomas Hughesden/Hughesdon, though her marriage has not been traced. Their children were: (I25) Catherine (1767), James (1769), Ellis (1771), Eleanor (1773), Haddock Thomas (1775), William (1777), Andrew (1779) and Mary Ann (1781), all baptised at St Nicholas, Deptford.1

By 1784 she was a a widow. Still of St Nicholas, Deptford, she was able to sign her name on her daughter’s marriage bond. In October that year she was living in King Street, Deptford.2

A widow from King Street, she was buried on the 29th July 1792, at Deptford St Nicholas.3
