Clematis can be grown in a number of different ways - In tubs in varying situations e.g. on a patio In rockeries, allowing the plant to grow wherever it wants Through shrubs and trees Up trellis and pergolas Against a wall or fence To cover a building e.g. shed or garage There are differing species of clematis that are more suitable to grow in for the ways listed above e.g. to cover a shed you would plant a vigorous variety like a Montana compared to a large flowering hybrid such as The President.

Growing through large trees - Montana varieties

Growing through medium sized trees - All alpinas and Macropetalas, Viticellas Alba luxurians, Etoile Violette, Little Nell, Purperea Plena Elegans, Kermesina, Venosa Violacea. Large flowering hybrids - Comtesse de Bouchard, Dorothy Walton, Ernest Markham, Gipsy Queen, Henryi, Huldine, Jackmanii, Lady Betty Balfour, Marie Boisselot, Mme Baron Veillard, Mrs Cholomendeley.
