Clematis Care - Growing Clematis

Clematis can be grown in a number of different ways:- In tubs in varying situations e.g. on a patio In rockeries, allowing the plant to grow wherever it wants Through shrubs and trees Up trellis and pergolas Against a wall or fence To cover a building e.g. shed or garage There are differing species of clematis that are more suitable to grow in for the ways listed above e.g. to cover a shed you would plant a vigorous variety like a Montana compared to a large flowering hybrid such as The President.



Examples of plants for specific situations

Growing through large trees - Montana varieties

Growing through medium sized trees - All alpinas and Macropetalas, Viticellas Alba luxurians, Etoile Violette, Little Nell, Purperea Plena Elegans, Kermesina, Venosa Violacea. Large flowering hybrids - Comtesse de Bouchard, Dorothy Walton, Ernest Markham, Gipsy Queen, Henryi, Huldine, Jackmanii, Lady Betty Balfour, Marie Boisselot, Mme Baron Veillard, Mrs Cholomendeley. Growing into shrubs - Barbara Jackman, Bees Jubilee, Mrs Cholomendeley, Nelly Moser, Dr. Ruppel, Elsa Spath, General Sikorski, H.F. Young, Joan Picton, Licoln Star, Miss Bateman, Richard Pennell.

For a North Wall - Alpina and Macropetala varieties, Nelly Moser, Wada's Primrose, Dr Ruppel, Mrs Chomondeley, Snow Queen, John Warren

For a South wall - Ernest Markham, Armandii, Lady Betty Balfour, Warsaw Nike.

For Containers - Miss Bateman, Asao, Carnaby, Corona, Dawn, Haku Ookan, Joan Picton, H.F. Young, Elsa Spath, John Warren, Snow Queen, The President, Rouge Cardinal, Mme Edouard Andre, Hagely Hybrid.
